excerpt from the swedish history musuems text about a 17th century icelandic book of magic

“Om du till exempel vill framkalla kräkning hos en ovän, ristar du trolltecken på ost eller fisk och ger till den du vill driva med “då skall han icke hava nytta av det som han äter den dagen”.

Om inte detta är straff nog kan du sedan använda dig av fjärt-runor. Skriv då trollstavar med ditt eget blod på ett vitt kalvskinn och säg: ”jag ristar dig åtta assrunor, nio naudrunor, tretton thursrunor vilka må plåga din buk med svår väderspänning och … våldsamt fjärtande … måtte aldrig ditt fjärtande upphöra varken dag eller natt…” “

English Translation (by me)

Say that you want to curse your enemy to vomit, then you are adviced to carve magical symbols on cheese or fish. Then you shall give these food items to the one you want to mock. the result, according to the book is “that they will be unable to gain nourishment nor pleasure from any meals for a day”.

but, if this is not enough punishment for your enemy you can step up your game, and use farting - runes. write magical runes with your own blod on the white pelt of a calf and say: “I am carving you with eight a - runes, nine n - runes, thirteen th - runes. may they torture your stomach with a severe feeling of bloating and aggersive farting. may your farting last forever, yes day and night you shall fart, forevermore!”

a book of magical spells from either the 17th or 16th century, written in icelandic. bought 1682 in copenhagen by the swedish historian  J. G. Sparfvenfeldt, who aquired for the swedish crowns collection. unknown who wrote the book, and for what porpuse, but because of the different handwritting in the book, it is believed it was written by at least two authors.

the book is kept at historiska museet in stockholm, sweden.

Stomach illnesses of various kinds took people of all ages, so trying to magic someone a bad stomach was pretty heinous a thing to do. It was punishable by death. From legal point of view, you’d be tried for attempted or successful murder.

In 1656, at Kirkjuból trial, father and son, both called Jón Jónsson, were tried and found guilty of witchcraft. The younger Jón Jónsson was found guilty of drawing fart runes against a girl he had fallen for, and who had refused him.

Considering THAT, I am not surprised.

This is the spread I used to interview my new deck. I based it off some other writings I’ve seen, so it isn’t the most original, but hopefully still useful. I hope you find it helpful when trying to understand more about a deck’s personality!

1. What’s your main characteristic? This is what is fundamental about your deck, what will always be true about it.

2. What element do you align with? Different decks align with different elements. It breaks down something like this: Major Arcana = spirit (good at spiritual matters and introspection) Wands = fire (potentially “sassy”, good at matters of passion) Swords = air (detached, intellectual, and introspective) Cups = water (good at matters of the heart and being kind) Pentacles/Coins = earth (grounded, contemplative, good at real life stuff) Furthermore, the card you draw might also hint at a characteristic. For ex., the eight of wands would show that your deck is good at future-telling, especially of what your dreams and passions will be

3. How do you see yourself? This is really a personality question. It is less “honest” than the first position, because it is more subjective.

4. How do you see me? This is how the deck currently views you. That is subject to change.

5. How do you view life? This way you can tell if your deck is optimistic, pessimistic, or realistic.

6. What can you teach me? The lessons your deck has to give.

7. What do you find easy? The sorts of questions your deck excels at.

8. What do you struggle with? The sorts of questions your deck finds more difficult to answer.

9. What do I need to know? This could be general, or it could be what you need to know about the deck.

10. What do you want from me? What the deck wants out of your relationship.

11. How can I improve our relationship? What you can do to bond more with your deck.
