Always ask who ran the survey, the study, the poll, ask how many people were involved, and ask about the breakdown of the demographics.

any of you who use the automatic captions know they suck shit and any of you who put any thought into it should understand that most youtubers are not going to caption their own videos or bother with designating people to do that if they’re not already doing so. community captions are the only way accurate captioning will ever happen for a lot of youtube content and taking them away for “lack of use” is Not Great

also even if theoretically youtubers do start putting in their own accurate captions, community captions are the BEST way to translate a video to another language. not just cuz the yter may only speak one language, but bc the community can translate the jokes and slang better than auto-translation (which translates literally) can.
