FACIAL MICRO EXPRESSIONS FOR WRITERS <3
A small precanon Mizi fic
Fandom:Alien stage
“My eyes are sewn shut, your words fall on deaf ears,
We both drown, hands and souls intertwined…”
The young women had beautiful hair that looked as though it had been forged from flames, and her mere presence seemed to align the stage to her whims, the golden lights shining overhead only amplifying the ruthlessness of the entire act as she raised her arms to the abyss is front of her, where tangled limbs raised theirs back in turn, indicating a mesmerized audience.
The bubble Mizi was floating in shook as she shifted around, she had started growing taller, and her limbs would bump against the material whenever she stretched . She had heard Mama talk about buying her a bigger one. She placed her face in her arms as the girl sang about the drowning lovers, though the Segyuin’s made hoots and clicks of mirth. Mizi guessed it was because most of them didn’t know the meaning of these words humans used. Why would they need to, when these fragile creatures sounded so beautiful either way?
For a moment, it was as though the girl was a shepherd, who would be followed to the centre of a storm if she wished. Her face had a layer of childish innocense, despite the smile getting lost in the calculating look in her eyes, which now turned from their fixation at the mass of flesh beneath to her opponent.
“The first breath, seawater floods my veins
The next, you caress my face
You won’t look at me, not a glance
As we journey to our grave”
Her opponent’s brown hair had been tied up into a long ponytail, which swished around slightly as she sang, and nestled deep within the notes, Mizi heard it. A tremor.
Her face hurt slightly from her own fingers grasping at it, as she shifted closer to the screen, eager to see her favourite part.
Maybe it was Mizi’s imagination, but the red haired woman’s smile was wider, somewhat crazed even, as they sang their final duet.
“My soul mourns on this ocean floor
After you ripped yourself away to safety
They say they found you tangled in a net
With dead fish for company
You always loved the shore, more than you could ever love me”
The score board fluctuated in the background as the music played on and it was never clearer to Mizi who the winner was.
The brown haired girl didn’t make a sound, not even a whisper, as a bullet struck the back of her neck. In the end, four of them were enough.
The winner stood, straight as a rod, the smile on her face now replaced with something else. She shifted, moving towards the lifeless body on the floor shining with the winner’s name from the screen. She sat on her knees and took one of the pale hands, slowly bringing it closer to her mouth. The segyuins screamed with delight at the act, the taunt after a death and their eyes were now fixed on the triumphant victor as she smiled, lips stained red. But Mizi could only look into her eyes, the small but sure flare of dominance, of power. The terrifying joy of having a bug crushed under one’s palm.
Mizi touched her hair, now upto her shoulders and she remembered the blood flowing in front of her eyes, getting into her mouth as she screamed with pain
“How adorable she is, even when she is crying! Does it hurt when mama pulls these strands?”
Mama loved her, so she let her live, in this small bubble made only for her, as the crushing pressure of the ocean around her threathened her weak organs.
The best way to love someone was to let your affection smother them, crush their bones and watch their breath run out.
And how Mizi wished she could love too.

Oh my gosh. I just found this website that walks you though creating a believable society. It breaks each facet down into individual questions and makes it so simple! It seems really helpful for worldbuilding!
Heads up that this is a very extensive questionnaire and might be daunting to a lot of writers (myself included). That being said, it is also an amazing questionnaire and I will definitely be using it (or at the very least, some of it).

This inspired me to see if Patricia C. Wrede’s Worldbuilding Questions are still online, and not only are they, they’re on the exact same page I saw them on in 1998. Somewhere there’s a binder of the Word doc I made of all of them and the answers I filled in for Baby’s First Fantasy World
PROJECT: Gotta finish the outline by 15th next month
Probability: unlikely
Why am I writing this here? As a reminder, ig. Also because I'm starting to think I need something to keep me in check.
I've already said that my number one piece of writing advice is to read.
But my number two piece of advice is this: be deliberate.
Honestly this would fix so many pieces of bad writing advice. Don't forbid people from doing something, tell them to be conscious and deliberate about it. This could help stop people from falling into common mistakes without limiting their creativity. Black and white imperatives may stop a few annoying beginner habits, but ultimately they will restrict artistic expression.
Instead of "don't use epithets": "Know the effect epithets have and be deliberate about using them." Because yes, beginners often misuse them, but they can be useful when a character's name isn't known or when you want to reduce them to a particular trait they have.
Instead of "don't use 'said'" or "just use 'said'": "Be deliberate about your use of dialogue tags." Because sometimes you'll want "said" which fades into the background nicely, but sometimes you will need a more descriptive alternative to convey what a character is doing.
Instead of "don't use passive voice": "Be deliberate about when you use passive voice." Because using it when it's not needed can detract from your writing, but sometimes it can be useful to change the emphasis of a sentence or to portray a particular state of mind.
Instead of blindly following or ignorantly neglecting the rules of writing, familiarize yourself with them and their consequences so you can choose when and if breaking them would serve what you're trying to get across.
Your writing is yours. Take control of it.
It probably sounds like I'm preaching to the choir here because most of my mutuals are already great writers. But I'm hoping this will make it to the right people.
This land is doomed for lovers, they say,
It runs through our blood, the shame
The wind mourns as it brings warnings from the past,
Just to hit the strands of hair on your face.
What do I listen to, the echoes or your laughter?
-------- a small piece from an idea I'm planning
sometimes you need dialogue tags and don't want to use the same four
