I try to only buy older books or check out the older versions from the library. It’s horrible how we treat children as though they aren’t capable of comprehending anything beyond basic vocab.

We’re reading the chronicles of Narnia to our two year old right now and she is absolutely enamored. Asks for more chapters every night and fights to stay awake to hear a little more. We read lion witch wardrobe and then watched the movie and she not only recognized scenes as they were happening but was also able to point out things that were about to happen. No screens and consistent reading of good children’s literature does wonders for children.

An issue I have with children's illustration these days is that there's either way too much going on (despite the artist technically being talented!) or it's generic and soulless. The arts of "simple yet charming" and "sophisticated yet not overstimulating" seem to have become less favoured by the publishing industry 😣
