yall met through rise of all people - she’s asking you about the homework, and kanji’s walking in all boisterous telling her she needs to get going to junes or she’s gonna be la- oh. it’s you. the pretty stranger he sees in the hallways, looking at him with wide eyes like he’s always wanted. his cheeks flush and he stammers out a hello before he tells rise he’s leaving for “the- the thing! you know!!” and runs off. rise packs up her things and rushes after him, waving to you before she goes. you’re left with a textbook open in front of you and a confused expression on your face.

about a week later you’re eating lunch with rise, and you finally get the courage to ask about the bleach-blond stranger. “oh, kanji?” she answers, looking at you with rice on her cheeks, “he’s so into you it’s embarrassing. he’s always asking me what kind of food you like and what books you read. it’s annoying.” she turns her head back to her bento, grinning. she doesn’t miss your shocked, blushing face, which flusteredly mimics her actions.

the next day, a small doll that looks like you appears on your desk. upon closer inspection, you see that the only deviance from your standard yasogami uniform is the yellow accents are replaced with your favorite color. while you swoon, rise excitedly texts under her desk, her almost-frenzied texting sending alarms off in your head and you grab the phone from her hand, reading it. 

“OMG !!! kanji !! i didnt kno u were that gd at sewing !! now my bestie is abt 2 faint ovr ur stupid doll !!” is already sent, and your skin pales, embarrassed

“u HAVE to te” is where it cuts off, and you’re about to chew tf out of her before kanji bursts in, shushing the whole freaking classroom. his cheeks are RED and holding a letter (his corny ahh watched too much anime making that doll 🤦‍♀️)

he doesn’t look at you as he puts it on your desk, running out of the room

you stare at the door, ajar from his dramatic exit, while perhaps too much color returns to your face. once you look down at rise, she’s looking up at you with a devious smile, too pleased with herself.

she pumps her fist, saying “score!” under her breath. “now gimme my phone back!”

you transfer after him, and you’re not from a big town like yu, so you were treated like a social pariah instead of all that like he was. 

he felt so bad. like astronomically. for some reason, he blamed himself instead of his weird peers for your treatment. he thought that, since moving from the Big City was so novel, and yosuke did so the year prior, this did astronomical damage to their expectations of transfers (and did! but he didnt understand that it wasn’t his fault)

he invited you to junes for lunch with his friends, and you hit it off so well with them he’s regretful he didn’t invite you sooner (this is like a month after you arrive lmao)

he also regrets not looking at the small, polite smile you give when first meeting someone; you are THE cutest thing he has ever seen

he luvs hearing you laugh at teddie and chie when they eventually bicker 

after a couple weeks of saturday hangouts with his friends, the group gets smaller and smaller until, one day, it’s just you and him

zomg!!! yosuke falls in love at first sight (and you’re just staring at him trying to figure out if the noodles are behind him LMAO)

he stumbles over his words, but he eventually asks if you have everything you need

yosuke is surprisingly a good shopping buddy, as he knows exactly where to find the best deals (he literally marked them)

you thank him profusely and promise to help him when he needs it!!! yosuke was very tempted to use this favor on help with restocking…but (somehow) fought the urge and waved with a smile

IMMEDIATELY texts yu about the cutie who needed help with their groceries

the next day at school, you’re complaining (rather loudly, mind you) about being made to buy groceries last night and yosuke pops his head into your classroom, bright smile on his face at the familiar voice

he’s blushing and stammering and asking for your number? you’re so confused but you give anyway, since he was eager to hold your basket while you shopped. he leaves the classroom exasperated, yu grinning like a madman and chie complaining about having to hear even more about the stranger at work last night

You’re not sure if you’ve ever felt your toes before. Sure, you can remember feeling them, but you’ve been so cold for so long that wiggling your toes is a distant memory. This is what you’re telling Heffron, who you’re sure would be laughing if the moon weren’t so high up in the sky.

“No, seriously, Babe, I think I missed that milestone because this is the first time I’ve ever cared so much,” you whine. You’re so cold.

“For Christ’s sake, let me sleep! We’re lucky the artillery isn’t keeping us up for once, and now I’ve gotta worry about you, too?” 

Babe doesn’t seem to want to discuss your frozen limbs with you. Now, you’re starting to notice how chilly your fingers are. Easy has been in the woods for weeks. What is wrong with you? Much to Heffron’s dismay, you try and lift yourself out of the foxhole you’re both crowded in. 

“What’s wrong with you?” he hissed. “They could see you, dummy! You chatterbox, get down!” 

He pulls you down, but you were already slipping since the snow had frozen over around you. You stumble back into the foxhole while he pulls you into him, his chilled nose bumping into yours. 

“Well, what’s wrong with you? If I want to leave I can!” you huff. You don’t know if you’re embarrassed about slipping or him pulling you so hard, for a second you were afraid your noses were stuck together (and would that really be so bad?).

“Chatterbox, you can’t be risking yourself like that,” he whispers, squinting his eyes at you in the dark. He gently grabs your hand and rubs your fingers with his hands, trying to warm you up. You’re too exhausted (from the literal war you’re in, from the cold, you’re not quite sure) to pull away. After all, he is your best friend, right?

You look closer at Heffron in the dark. You can see the ever-present cheerful shine in his eyes is still there, despite the need for sleep haunting his features. Now you’re starting to regret being so mean to him. Ever since he came in as a replacement, he’s been such an amazing fr- wait, is he laughing? Yes, he is! He’s laughing! You’re freezing and admiring him, and he’s laughing! 

“Why are you looking at me like that?” he sputters, barely managing to speak with how hard he’s laughing. “Haven’t we been looking at each other every day? What’s the matter now? Has my nose fallen off?” 

Your eyebrows furrow, and he pulls away, letting go of your hands in favor of cradling his stomach. How typical of him, you think, ruining the moment we fall in love just to laugh at me. He grips your shoulder, eyes and smile wide.

“What’s wrong, cat got your tongue? You know you can tell me anything, I won’t make too much fun of you!” he says, catching his breath, and you’re afraid that maybe he’s read your mind. Your skin suddenly turns to ice, the combination of hot embarrassment being horrible for your frozen cheeks. You squint your eyes shut, praying for something to spare you this conversation. You’d never struggled talking to Babe, not really, so suddenly being so aware of how your heart was beating and somehow sweat was forming under your gloves was hell to you. You clawed at your scarf, eyebrows furrowing in an emotion you couldn’t quite place, a strangled growl leaving the confines of your throat 

“Woah, woah, hotshot, don’t hurt yourself on me. Do I need to yell for Doc Roe to check you out? Maybe he could, I dunno, say some fancy French to you until you’re back to normal?” Babe put his hands back on your wrists, guiding your hands away from your throat. You, in your horrible effort to escape your embarrassment, slide your hands down to his, and you lean your head into his shoulder.

“I don’t know, I’m just really happy you’re here, Babe,” you mutter, your already quiet voice muffled by his coat. You hear him sigh, his arms wrapping around you.

After a moment, you hear above you, “I’m happy you’re here, too.” You smile, finally feeling something thaw. Despite the moment, he nuzzles his frozen nose into the crook of your shoulder, and you shriek.

“You big fat jerk, what’s wrong with you?! You coulda killed me!”

Babe laughs once again, pressing a soft kiss into the spot he attacked on your neck. “Sorry, sorry, I couldn’t help it, you’re so warm, chatterbox! All that yapping turns you into a heater!”

when he was told a woman would be billeted with him, his immediate response was a groan

like, what genius decided a female marine should be deployed with a bunch of men who haven’t seen a woman in weeks? 

of course, the groan was in his head, and he felt like a weight lifted off of his shoulders when he heard you were serving as a corpsman (corpswoman?) alongside doc bryan, and he would be responsible for ensuring you’re safe

when he first saw you walking up to his tent, his first thought was that the men were going to eat you alive

his second thought was how pretty you are!! how sweet ❤️

as you were introduced to him by godfather himself, you kept thinking of how there was no way this guy was the man in charge of an entire platoon. he was in charge if keeping you alive, and you couldn’t stop staring at his blue eyes? gosh, you were in for a rough deployment

as godfather patted your back (rather harshly, but you chalked it up to male marines being a different kind of aggressive than the friends you’ve made thus far) and “handed the reins” so to speak to fick, he introduced himself to you not as lieutenant fick, but as nate who was excited to see what you were going to accomplish with the men

good lord, you were in for a rough deployment. getting through that introduction without stuttering was your biggest accomplishment of the hour. i mean, wouldn’t you at least blush? he blinks his eyes and tells you how excited he is to see you work, and you’re supposed to have a stoneface? 

you sleep in the medical tent for the time being, as the first recon battalion is not ready for you, unfortunately

despite the months of advance notice and release forms you all had to sign, but since when are marines known for their meticulous literacy?

nate couldn’t bring himself to talk to you 

not out of spite or disrespect for your position, but he was frustrated enough with schwetje that he didn’t want you to think he was an angry guy

he finally got to meet you and not you as a medic when he skinned his knee. ironic, isn’t it?

the wound wasn’t even that bad, but it had a pretty brutal amount of dirt in it so you offered your bandana for him to grip on

he declined, but gosh did he wish he hadn’t when you applied disinfectant

you looked up at him sympathetically, patted his knee, and said “i’ll try to be quick, lieutenant, don’t worry” with a small smile and suddenly his knee wasn’t hurting, his heart was

he wanted to hug you and tell you not to worry and that he’d protect you

he thought about that moment every time he saw you before the platoon stepped off

you smiled at him every time he would make eye contact with you (you hadn’t intended for it to be romantic, but you weren’t complaining)

once yall stepped off, he made sure to check in with you whenever the platoon was stopped for any reason

sleeping? right as you’re drifting off, he’s there with water for your team

breakfast? what a coincidence, he “liked the view here” and ate breakfast with you! 

stopped to figure out the route? he’s heading back to his humvee when he stops and makes sure you’re getting rest

you hadn’t been too sure what to think about your lieutenant, but you finally came to a conclusion - he was so into you

whenever doc bryan would be listening in on the debrief, he would take you with him - guess where you stand!! 

gunny makes sure you stand right next to nate, and when you’re bold you (not so) discreetly put your hand on his back and lean in closer, trying to play it off like that’s the only reason you do it lol

gunny teases nate about it when you walk off, asking if he was really that nervous about driving through a village or if you’re just that scary of a marine

i think the moment he knew he fell in love was when you sighed “you’re such a nag, nate” as he passed you after he went off on the team leads letting iraqis walk between the humvees

his stomach flipped, knowing you got that phrase from him

he had to take a moment to cool off, and once you knew he was calm you came to apologize

he asked you out properly when the platoon was notified they would be going home - you responded with a hug and a kiss on his cheek (gunny will never let anyone know he ever saw, not even you)

stafford asked why the stone-faced lieutenant suddenly had a smile stuck on his face. fick furrowed his brows and said “i’m just happy to be going home, is all.” later, q-tip and christeson stayed up far too late trying to figure out any reason why. christeson figured it had to be about you, but stafford didn’t think either of you would take the risk

ever the creative type, nate took you out on a dinner date when you both got home

he yearned for you when he came home, so he pulled a couple strings and almost paid someone to personally escort you to him just so he didn’t have to wait any longer.

spike rides in trombley's lap after the water tank incident. he wants a way to defend himself just in case

ray will refuse to sleep in order to find bugs for spike to eat. that’s what lizards eat, right? well, spike eats them anyway. 

sneaks spike home. ray doesn’t like to talk about it so it’s wise not to ask

spike likes to live on the edge, so even though ray went and bought the best of the best for him, he still likes to live outside of his tank and follow ray around

buys a bunch of shirts with a pocket on the front so he can bring his lizard everywhere (and does) 

spike likes to jump out from time to time, especially if ray is around a bunch of people. ray isn’t allowed in a couple supermarkets because spike jumps out onto the deli meats every time. store managers live in fear of the day ray chooses to go into their store

the poor baby was hit by shrapnel sometime recently, as her wound was still bleeding

immediately ran to doc bryan and convinced him that he needed to help her

doc only did it because walt was on the verge of tears (he doesn’t want to “waste” the supplies on something that isn’t one of the men, but ultimately decided morale is just as important as treating flesh wounds and helped the dog)

at least, that’s what he told gunny wynn. it’s up to you whether or not anyone believed him :p

sunshine literally could not walk, so she rode with stafford and christeson since they had the room in their humvee (they beggedddd nate to let her stay with them and he only said yes because he knew be wouldn’t hear the end of it)

she laid in the back with a smile on her face, panting, and it was an unspoken rule among the men to not mention her presence to higher-ups. lieutenant fick pretended he couldn’t see her, and gunny just didn’t mention it. what they don’t know can’t hurt them, right?

once she was healed, sunshine proved to be a great source of morale for the men. 

she only answers to walt. she’ll respond whenever she’s called, but if walt tells her to “sit down” or “speak,” she’ll do it with a smile 

lots of tears when walt has to go home. nobody really teases him since sunshine was a pet to them, too

walt somehow convinced the folks at mathilda to take her???

he gets mail every once in a while for a couple of months after he returned home with a picture of sunshine. no letter, return address is camp mathilda but no name on it. just an envelope full of pictures of his dog :,)

he found a hamster

in his limitless creativity, he named it hamster

was afraid that keeping it would scare it to death, but this is a warrior rodent

hamster lives in brad’s helmet

when he had to wear it in training, hamster would hide in his mess kit

brad likes to comb through its fur with the one he was given by the marines. pappy jokes that he’s prepping to shave the hamster, but brad HATES that joke and literally leaves the tent whenever he does that 💀

he had to leave hamster behind at mathilda, because he knew the stress would literally kill it

the day he decided he would let it go, he came back from training to see hamster was gone. literally tore apart the tent looking for it

couldn’t find it - little does he know, hamster scampered his way to godfather’s tent and ferrando entrusted it to a marine who was staying behind 

brad thinks about hamster a lot. mostly just hoping that it didn’t get into a fight with a rat, but sometimes wonders if it misses him.

finds a gecko in his bag in the middle of nowhere, iraq

biggest scare of his life

once he calms down a bit, and realizes the gecko is…kinda cute (?), he buckles down and decides to keep it

the gecko really likes his bag for some reason, and for another odd reason, he lets it live there

he likes to watch it crawl around. don’t ask he won’t answer

it’s not like there’s a shortage of bugs… trust doc is more than happy to have pest control (this may or may not be fick’s reason for not making him let it go)

gecko does NOT get a name doc bryan does NOT want to get attached (more than he already is)

he wakes up one day and gecko is gone :( he looks all over and asks everybody but poor doc can’t find him

luckily the battalion’s war scribe got a photo of doc with the gecko before it moved on to the next free ride, so when he gets home from deployment, he’s greeted with a letter containing the picture!

hangs it up on his wall :)

little do ray and doc know, manimal planted those animals

he meant for it to be a prank but they BOTH ended up loving them 😭

as he’s sulking his failed prank, he almost freaking trips on someone’s bag

upon further inspection (before he started yelling to anyone who would listen about almost getting injured), he realizes that was not someone’s bag; it was a cat!

definitely not lt. fick’s cat - this one had a scarred-up ear and was definitely older than a few months

he thought it was metal af and decided to leave it be. hopes it would stay long enough so he can call it scraps

the cat (very cinematically, might i add) mewls after him, pulling his heartstrings back to it and manimal spent a good few minutes scratching behind its ears

he got the cat to purr!! anthony instantly falls in love 

scraps really loves jerky, just like walt’s dog! anthony is very careful not to feed it too much at once because he doesn’t want his little tummy to hurt 

he got mac and cheese in an mre and saved the cheese left over for it. scraps loved it and every marine silently vowed they’d do the same to see scraps so happy again

scraps had to be left behind in kuwait; there was a little girl who squealed at the sight of him and gave scraps dried fish, and manimal just had to leave him with her (he also didn’t know how he would get him home lol)

Carwood Lipton had never been in so much pain before. His head rang like never before, and his throat was so scratchy that even breathing felt too harsh an action. He groans at the sound of footsteps on the old, creaky stairs of the house he had only recently moved into. The loud, horrible knocks that rang through his room only a few seconds later may have been worse than any emergency alarm ever sounded.

Carwood hardly managed to croak out a meager “go away” before Ron walked into their shared room with a cup atop a saucer, sweet chamomile wafting from its rim. This caused him to erupt into a fit of coughs, gripping the blanket he had tangled himself in.

Ron chuckled. Carwood got sick pretty often, a consequence of his stressful job, but it was a rare sight for him to be unable to get out of bed due to illness. Ron cherished the feeling of being able to take care of his lover, finding it difficult to show affection in any other overt way. 

“Here, take this,” he said, softly, setting the saucer onto Carwood’s bedside table. “You’re going to need this if you want to go to work tomorrow.” He pressed a light kiss onto Carwood’s forehead, as he finally stopped coughing. 

With watery eyes, Carwood gave a nod of appreciation as he lifted himself up to drink his tea. “Extra honey, just how you like it,” said Ron, smoothing the covers of the bed that had become unruly. 

Carwood took Ron’s hand in his, pressing a kiss to Ron’s palm. “Thank you, really,” Carwood whispered, throat beginning to heal due to the chamomile tea he had been provided with.

in the war he sends you letters with pressed flowers in them. don’t know where he found them, don’t know how he got the time to search, but it warms your heart just knowing how much he must have thought about you to remember to find a new pressed flower for your letters!

they get sent sporadically, they work him hard so he can’t send things often

but, my goodness, when you do? best believe you spend the night pouring over each word, carefully chosen to communicate exactly what he wants to say

he thinks about your eyelashes a lot. short, long, it doesn’t matter what they look like!! 

he thinks of them like curtains into your soul: perfectly framing the windows that lead to your heart (he may or may not have written that for you…he gets poetic when it comes to you)

so when he gets time with you, sitting alone, he loves to gaze into them

he can’t bear to spend tike apart with you when he gets home

those pretty eyes, gazing up at him? he can’t help it, he always finishes early

owns his own business, probably. that way, he comes home early when staying away from you for too long. you’re always happy to help :)
