Welcome back, Hilda Hilda
FANTASY HIGH SOPHOMORE YEAR, Episode 4: Heartache On the Celestine Sea CITY COUNCIL OF DARKNESS, Episode 10: Zaeth's Sire and a Bear on Fire
Something about Jean Valjean saying "I stole bread because my sister's child was close to death" makes me think of Fantine and all the bad things she did just for Cosette. They're so similar and they both love Cosette ugh 😭🩵🩵
I've always loved how unique Jean Valjean is as a protagonist--pushing middle age when we meet him, no family, and no romantic interest. But I've also always loved the uniqueness of his relationship with Fantine and the similarities they share.
They've both been crushed by societal forces, forced to take desperate measures to keep their family alive, and are subsequently saved by selfless people. I'm rereading Les Mis currently and it struck me this time that the timing of Fantine's plight shows Jean Valjean that he's not infallible even after his reformation, which is why it's so especially crushing for him and can explain why he commits to an all-out response of personally raising Cosette himself; although so much has changed, even now he is culpable in "robbing" another person and failing someone he was responsible for. Fantine teaches Valjean this, and I love how they're thrown together by fate and end up parenting Cosette together, separated by time, linked through a unique relationship that isn't romantic but is characterized by deep kinship. Victor Hugo traces Fantine's mental journey after Valjean's intervention in a way that echoes Valjean's, especially "Valjean's Soliloquy" in the musical: "He had saved her after she had most outrageously insulted him! Could she have been wrong? Must she now change her very heart?" Earlier, she also says, "I had Cosette to think of, so I was forced to become a bad woman." Switch out a few key words and you get a perfect line for Valjean. Hugo goes so far as to explicitly link them together through sheer proximity of words; another paragraph goes, "What is the true story of Fantine? It is the story of society's purchase of a slave. A slave purchased from poverty, hunger, cold, loneliness, defenselessness, destitution. A squalid bargain: a human soul for a hunk of bread..."
(Notice Hugo didn't have to mention bread in the above quote. Since Fantine is the topic of discussion, mentioning money or Cosette's survival would have made a lot more sense. If I'm remembering correctly, food/eating is only mentioned once during Fantine's plight in the novel, and only in passing at that. All of which points to that last sentence being a clear callout to Valjean.) So basically, yes, yes, and yes. I love them both for the relationship they share and their similarities.
i did it, i finished my ‘Seasons at Beanies’ series! look at this perfectly normal peaceful town. nothing at all can go wrong there.

Happy pride month from pride goat 🏳🌈🐐
tbh i love hear me outs but i also love the opposite of hear me outs where it’s like nearly everyone thinks they’re fuckable except you
Brenda is a very fun character to me because like. In NPMD she's a Popular Cheerleader Girl who's a bit judgy. Not too much character there but she's Silly and played by Bryce Charles so I already very much love her.
And then Miss Holloween goes 'Hey so what if the Silly Popular Cheerleader Girl who was a very minor character in her first apperance was stuck pretty much by herself after highschool because all her friends left and she clearly feels left behind because of it.' And it's like. Oh. Oh my goodness this girl is all alone. She was popular in highschool but now she's alone (aside from Holloway but still). And it's so realistic but so heartbreaking at the same time.

you just don't get news cycles like this any more
As a starkid fan I think "do I like this character or do I just like the actor" is a very important thing to consider

This moment cracks me up bc Tadius has no context for Ella being in the woods; he has no idea he’s just started busting moves at her friends’ fresh gravesite.
🎶I KNOWWWW YOU’RE WORRRRTHY🎶
