Why do you think Rhaenyra named her youngest two Aegon and Viserys? Surely he it would’ve made more sense to give these names to her heirs
Personally of the belief Aegon, Viserys and Visenya (especially Visenya) were names Rhaenyra chose for her children since Day 1, she just never got the chance to use them until her last three were born.
With her eldest two I am convinced both times she thought she was having a girl, so the only name Nyra would even consider was Visenya. When Jace was born she let the Velaryons choose his name because … well you know why … although Laenor wanted to name him Joffrey, Corlys refused and insisted on Jacaerys. This is an uncommon Targaryen name but not for the Velaryons, thus emphasising that Jace will be the first Velaryon king instead of the seventh Targaryen ruler even though he’ll be referred to as King Jacaerys I Targaryen.
With Luke I like to think Harwin chose his name, we know both he and Laenor were with Rhaenyra when she gave birth which suggests to me the relationship between the three was a lot more amicable. Again Rhaenyra was insisting on Visenya, a girl is needed more than ever now to be Jace’s wife after all, so let Harwin name their son. Headcanon his mother’s name was Lucy or something similar so named Luke after her.
As for Joffrey, well obviously Laenor chose his name. Again, the man is an absolute saint who’s protecting Rhaenyra and their children from bastardy rumours so if he wants to give their baby a non-Valyrian name let him!
So from her six children Rhaenyra only named the last three. Aegon because like I said she always wanted to name her son this and moreover it also reaffirms that her line are the main royals not Alicent’s son. She’s reclaiming the name from the Greens, Aegon belongs to the main Targaryen branch not the lower ranking ones.
Viserys because (1) she loves her dad and (2) she needs to get back into his good graces. Besides, by this point she’s given up trying to have a girl, and Viserys is the closest she’ll ever get to Visenya 🤷🏽♀️.
Simply from a writing perspective it makes sense that George will give traditional Targaryen names to the sons who he knows will be kings.
Also I’ve forgotten who it was but someone made a post about how Visenya is a cursed name, every time someone tries to name their daughter after the Warrior Queen it spells disaster for House Targaryen.
Maegor almost ended the Targaryen dynasty after only 3 rulers in his attempts to get a child he could name after his beloved mother.
Rhaenyra has always wanted to name her daughter Visenya, the dragons were wiped out following the civil war for her throne.
And we all know what happened to House Targaryen after Rhaegar tried to get a Visenya.
