reasons i havenβt replied back:
- iβm socially exhausted - i donβt have the time right now - i donβt know how to reply - i have a bad memory and got distracted - iβm having a depressive episode and donβt have the energy to socialise
not reasons i havenβt replied back:
- iβm ignoring you just because - i hate you - iβm fed up with you - i donβt want to be your friend anymore
Ok but like. What the fuck is there to do on the internet anymore?
Idk when I was younger, you could just go and go and find exciting new websites full of whatever cool things you wanted to explore. An overabundance of ways to occupy your time online.
Now, it's just... Social media. That's it. Social media and news sites. And I'm tired of social media and I'm tired of the news.
Am I just like completely inept at finding new things or has the internet just fallen apart that much with the problems of SEO and web 3.0 turning everything into a same-site prison?
Long collection of resources under the cut.
You're right that the internet is smaller than it used to be, but there's still some cool stuff left in the corners. I'd recommend checking checking out Neocities if you haven't--it's an independent web hosting platform like Geocities of the old web, and there are hundreds of interesting and active pages discoverable both through their search function and through web buttons (links attached to small pictures with the title of a website) within the websites themselves. Here are three examples of web buttons you may find in link pages:
Most Neocities websites have link pages or button collections with anywhere from tens to hundreds of these. Don't be afraid to explore!
If you're looking for something more like a search engine, I can point you towards Marginalia. It's not a particularly smart engine, but it's perfectly usable if you've ever been taught to use search engines back when they were mostly run through keywords instead of full sentence comprehension. There's also an "about" and "tips" section on the front page with more information. The algorithm of Marginalia can be filtered by the user to allow, disallow, or require JavaScript depending on your needs, plus there are filters designed specifically to prioritize web 1.0 sites or mostly text-based ones. It is possible to search for modern websites with it, but it can return websites from just about any decade (since the invention of the web, obviously) so long as they contain the information you're looking for. For example, here are some random interesting sites I've found using Marginalia:
Native Languages of the Americas: Native American Cultures
BASIC HTML COMPETENCY IS THE NEW PUNK FOLK EXPLOSION!
Earthbound Text Labs by Bill Eager
The possibilities for discovery are truly endless.
Now you might want to know about directories. These make browsing for websites easier, but require you to read through and judge which ones to visit, as there aren't algorithms ranking the sites besides the whim of whoever coded the directory. Some of them have themes, others don't. Here are two that I've used:
Yesterlinks Directory
Ichigo Directory
Directories can be harder to come by just by surfing the net, but they aren't impossible to find. Many personal websites have their own directories of interesting sites hidden within them.
Webrings are similar to directories, but are actually more community-based. You have to register your website to be a part of a webring, usually by sending an email to whoever runs it and meeting some kind of entry criteria. For example, my personal website used to be a part of a webring called Sweet Dreams, which was for websites that heavily utilize color palettes and images of cute things, particularly sweets. Webrings will give you access to a widget upon entry that allow visitors and other members to browse between the registered websites in a massive ring, ergo, where the term gets its name. Webrings can have any theme or criteria for entry. If you can make a website about it, you can find a webring for it.
Now, you might be wondering about social media alternatives. I can't offer much, but I can nudge you towards the idea of forums. Here's one I found that could really use some traffic. I also browse a bit on MelonLand forum, which is actually closed right now--it's currently closed on Mondays--but on any other day of the week, you can find a fun community there dedicated to web revival. You can find it through MelonLand's main page. I'd also recommend checking out SpaceHey, which is a MySpace clone that's customizable and easy to use.
I hope this is of some help to you. The internet may feel less magical than it used to be, but that doesn't mean that the spark has completely died out. These types of indie websites need more attention if we ever hope to reverse the damage done to the internet by centralization and corporate interest. People are trying to make the web a cooler place to be, but we're going to have to do the work of finding and interacting with these projects in order to get them off the ground someday.
ALSO you should consider browsing Virtual Pet List and seeing if there are any pet sites you might be interested in playing. There is a whole genre of browser games right under your nose
Another one that I just found recently is this, which is a whole collection of blogs, organized by topic!
A collection of 1,966 blogs about every topic
Look guys the real internet IS STILL THERE I'm going to cry
Getting off of twitter and onto neocities has really healed me and I am so glad to see it is healing other people too ;u; let's retreat into the self-made digital woods and away from corporate bs pls, I am so tired
REBLOGGING
so you're telling me the fifa world cup is all men? its all men's teams? and so is the superbowl? and all the sports teams that states are known for and make copious amounts of merch for are also men's teams? and only 5 women have ever entered formula one since its inception in 1950 and only two of them were able to compete? and this is normal? its acceptable?
If that trans girl gets super weirdly apologetic, like is borderline apologizing for breathing or is apologizing for things that are basically nothing/happened forever ago, whatever you do, do not leave her alone. Chances are it's one of two things, and neither of them are good; she's either bordering on a breakdown and thinks basically everything she does is wrong, or is past that point and desperately wants to make sure no one's angry at her before she hurts herself/takes her own life. You might think it's weird, you might get tired of it and want to push her away, but for the love of god do not do that. Her apologizing every 0.5 seconds is because she's been taught not to value her own emotions, but they're overpowering her and she doesn't know what to do other than apologize like her life depends on it. Her life might not depend on it, but it very well could depend on how you respond to her heart's most desperate cries for help
a gentle, sweet "are you apologizing for the sun shining? :)" is one of my favorite ways to respond to other trans women who apologize for existing, for taking up space, for having needs, for wanting to be known and loved. you have to let her know she matters to you, that her presence is like the sunshine
when I treat trans women this way, I notice they apologize less over time and get more comfortable voicing their needs to me without shrinking themselves
it's not. what if we killed whoever taught you to feel that way

one thing that I think is fucking hilarious about the iwtv/tvl perspective shift is the way Lestat repeats himself but the context reframes him in the most pathetic way possible
like when heβs yelling βVA TE FAIRE FOUTREβ at Louis while heβs slamming the incinerator door shut in season 1, and then in the divorce court scene in tvl he says the same thing but he sounds like a whiny gay housewife. queerest line read in the whole show, Iβd call it a hate crime if it wasnβt so accurate
and then the contrast between him whispering/hissing/drawling βI have the blood of Akasha in meβ in season 2 and then his weird blithe tension in the tour bus in tvl when he says the same thing. Like heβs a middle school edgelord saying he has an everything-proof shield on the playground. Wild shit
something something, Lestat doesnβt understand how he could be threatening to Louis because white men with privilege donβt see how their actions appear to marginalized groups, his perception of himself is coloured by both self-aggrandizement and self-loathing, Louis told the story as it appeared to him and Lestat is doing the exact same shit, something something this show is still about how storytelling depends on the storyteller, something something. yeah
One thing I'm really loving about the perspective shift between Interview with the Vampire and The Vampire Lestat is how Lestat and Louis appear in each other's narratives, through each other's eyes.
Louis sees Lestat as this primal force of nature who looks like a romance novel hero, can effortlessly control any room, is "preternaturally charming," impeccably turned out, no one can say no to him for long.
but we get in LESTAT'S head, and suddenly he has scars and a tangled mane of hair, people are constantly talking over him, he sweats, he's getting beat up and his clothes are getting destroyed in a non-sexy way, he's flailing around wildly with NO idea what he's doing, people (lestat included) think he's untalented and annoying.
And LOUIS, well. Louis clearly sees himself as uncanny, reserved, compelling but a little off-putting. He is other: cut-off from humanity, holding his emotions and relationships at arm's length.
Then we see him in The Vampire Lestat, and it's like no. This is the warmest, cutest, sexiest, coolest, most desirable man who has ever walked the face of the earth.
can I come over and look at you like this
POV you are Daniel Molloy and you just woke up 0.00001 seconds ago

The Vampire Lestat is a unique show because it is able to make the viewers also feel like we're going through the psychosis Lestat is going through

I know theres links going around for TVL and I know AMC isnβt available outside of America. But for the love of God, if you do live in America, please stream it on AMC+. We will not get a 4th season if everyone is pirating.
i think people are starting to confuse class analysis with bioessentialism. like... no not all men do this, but Men as a constructed social class do do this. that's still okay to say. that is regular material analysis of the world around us.
hey white people . if u dont know how to pronounce an ethnic persons name *google it* or if its someone ur talking directly to *ask them*. dont fucking do that "erm i dont know how to pronounce but __" or "im gonna butcher this haha" or "im not even gonna bother trying" . ur not funny. do u know what poc think when they hear u saying that ? u sound like a loser asshole and we dont want to spend time with u . im so fucking tired of watching youtube videos about media from my country and hearing those phrases. im tired of people saying that to my face . i respect someone who clearly looked it up and is tryong but says my name wrong over someone who just goes with whatever bad first guess they had without trying. u have too many resources at ur disposal to keep doing this. for the love of god just Fucking Try. if ur confused Just Try.
I highly recommend Forvo.com, the website where native speakers of a language contribute their time and voices to read words and names in their own language. It is a fantastic way to expand your world, open up your ears, and it's way more likely to nab a hit than just googling.
wow , I didn't know this existed, thanks so much for sharing the resource !! I will absolutely be using it now too π€
I've been watching all the new TVL reaction videos as I am wont to do, and I have to say, I'm genuinely shocked at how few people recognise Lestat's victimhood?? Vis-Γ -vis Gabriella, I mean.
It's just video after video of people cringing and going "i don't know if I can be okay with this" or "Ok, it's different for vampires, but still weird" or "the episode is spent trying to tell us that 'it's different for vampires, sure', and the episode is telling us none of these things??????
I get that incest is a really taboo, confronting subject, and that might make it difficult to process, but the show is telling us so much about Lestat's feelings?? It's right there! What exactly is it about the story that is telling you you should be okay with the incest??? If it was just a handful of people reacting like this, I wouldn't be as surprised as I am, but it's pretty much every video I've seen?
Even the responses that aren't just knee-jerk disgust or reluctant acceptance barely draw from what the show is giving us, and in one particular case resort to Freudian "strong mother figure" Oedipus complex nonsense?? Or then it's just a game of thrones joke.
Again and again, Lestat's perfunctorily flippant voice over addresses the elephant in the room, and his arguments/assurances get progressively weaker. We are shown multiple times that Lestat has never been in an equal position to his mother, and that she has taken advantage of that since their mortal life. There is an inherent power imbalance to their relationship (parent and child) that was only exacerbated by their abusive surroundings, and despite Lestat's arguments, immortality has not, and will not change this!
Lestat isn't an enthusiastic active participant in their sexual relationship! For God's sake, look at his face! His expressions alone should tell you everything you need to know!
The masked reluctance and fear of abandonment is constantly present between them simply on his face. And this is just the tip of the ice berg! Everything about the episode was telling us that Lestat is doing everything in his power to cope with the wrongness of it all competing with his desperate need for support and affection! It is crushing to watch!!! How does the public not see this?????
Thank you divorce for all you've done for music

still caring about internet friends you lost touch with years ago is so embarrassing. yeah i had a deam we met up irl recently. the last time we spoke was maybe 7-8 years ago. i still wear the laces we randomly decided was a sign of our friendship. i dont know what any of your socials are or if youre even active on any. sometimes i see someones art resemble yours and i wonder for hours. do you still go by that name you chose? whenever i see it i wonder if its you. we couldve passed each other in this vastness a thousand times and not have a clue.
we were lonely kids having fun together. do you remember?
I have dreams about HIGHSCHOOL friends π people from over a decade ago to people from a year ago . It's a weird existence to have
Every time you go in a public place and something ISNβT disgusting itβs because somebody cleaned it. Every time you feel comfortable using a public bathroom or sitting at a restaurant table or setting something on a gas station counter or playing on a playground itβs because somebody cleaned it.
Thank you to everyone who cleans the world, especially those who are underpaid and under appreciated.
