The crux of the horror in The Cult is not the torture the drugs or the violence; it is a Batman who does not act. Who cannot act. Who is without will.

This is one of the strongest beats in the comic to me in terms of the plot (as opposed to the character beats for Bruce & Jason I've been focusing on in these posts). We suspect that Ratface is lying or otherwise misleading right away, but this reveal left my stomach sinking. It is also one of the few very solidly themed(? opinionated?) moments in the plot of the comic, which tends to flip flop on what it believes. Is it about the dangers of charismatic cult leaders? Use of religion to manipulate? Charlatans? Public indifference towards violence? (The way the comic flip flops on whether or not Blackfire actually buys what he's selling undercuts a lot of those themes as well as the mixed framing of criminals and homeless people on how sympathetically they're portrayed).

This beat could have led into a really good element of people joining together for an outlet for hate, an excuse, a group that will encourage it and let it build into violence. And with the lynchings later in the comic, I think it could have worked really well to take more of an anti-racism angle in the comic, but nevertheless.

Another great horror sequence.

Gotta pair this with the shot of Jason taking a bullet to the cape while saving Bullock in uhhhhhhh sometime early in the custody battle arc.

Love how quiet and stone cold competent Jason is in this.

I am a firm believer that Batman should not kill. But as a Joker hater who is aware of when this was written (and by whom lol), would that this had not been a dream!

Gorgeous lighting here by Bill Wray. Also this should a) be held up next to the shot of Jason in this same chained up pose in Task Force Z and b) should have his cape glitterized in a gif by somebody.

Come on, Bill. You know what color that robe should be. We both know. Beautiful coloring throughout the comic, but that robe SHOULD be magenta.

Jason's defensive posture here, a fighting stance but also guarding Batman.

JASON. And Bruce's utter terror at what he's saying!!

This is a great shot, and I love Jason's yellow cape spreading into the full backdrop.

No better way to snap the Batman into action than hurting his son. But that bright color change is also a visual cue of Bruce losing touch with reality.

Love the colors literally graying out a bit, subduing as Bruce exits his bloody rage. Bill Wray did a fabulous job on colors in this comic!

I care about the two of them a normal amount. It's fine.

Seeing Jason grab the chair subtly and then throw it feels just like Bruce grabbing the billiard ball in tec 570. Also look at his squishy face in combo with face kicking. Jason Todd. Have you heard of him.
