"Iām sorry." This time he had a reason to be. Anyone else, literally anybody else on the planet, and he would have sat them down and lectured them into oblivion about how this wasnāt his problem, nor was it his responsibility to pick up on the cues. But this was Astrid, his soul force, and Dustin, his best friend. Their problems were always his problems, even before the pair met one another.
"Iām an idiot."Ā
Sharing the weight of their problems didnāt make him any less angry. He was angry at himself for putting Astrid through marriage.Ā He was angry at the fact that the couple that preached that he and Lilly tried working out their relationship were the very same couple that werenāt going to last themselves. He was angry at Dustin for being so distant. He was angry at Senoia for being so far from the city. And he was angry at himself for not being able to tell the future; the latter proving how serious of an issue his anger problem was. The only good thing at that moment was that he wasnāt hitting anything orĀ anyone.
Griffin stopped dragging her when they reached the steps and squeezed her forearm. āWeāre going to my room, okay? Dustin wonāt look there, trust me. He knows if he comes anywhere near it Iāll kick his fucking ass.ā Climbing a few steps down the ladder, he reached out for her hand. āCome on. Careful.ā
I'm sorry.
I'm an idiot.
Oh, if only there were words for how right he was. Astrid wanted to scream at him, to punch him and hit him and tell him that they were both so stupidly blind, but she couldn't. Even when she opened her mouth, no sound came, save for a whimper preceding a fresh wave of tears. If only she had been the one with the gift for words, then maybe she could have told him sooner; maybe she would have told him as soon as she learned his own marriage was crumbling.Ā
It was no small miracle that she made it to the stairs without falling on her face or taking Griffin down with her. Hesitance came up to bat momentarily before her hand slipped into his, forcing her to marvel at the sheer warmth he radiated. Once upon a time, she fancied that she had given the same warmth to him.
Rather than dwelling, Astrid took a few unsteady steps forward and reached for his forearm to steady herself.Ā "It doesn't matter," she slurred, "your mother has some ... some stupid thing... and he's taking her. Cards. Old people. Church. Something stupid. Always something stupid."Ā
The revelation didnāt surprise him as much as it would have if he hadnāt known, deep down, that there was an underlying problem between the āperfect coupleā. He didnāt want to bring it up to shatter the illusion that everything was fine and break his beloved brotherās heart and moreso, to avoid pointing out that he was the one that introduced her to her own downfall. This was his fault.
His grip only tightened around her. āCome on, weāre going downstairs,ā was all he said before pulling her towards the stepladder.Ā
There were so many things he wanted to say and to ask, but he was in the wrong place and time. The right place and time would have been a few years ago when he bumped into her trying to sneak away from the family reunion and into the garage, but that didnāt happen so the next best thing was behind a locked door, preferably where she could lie down.
There was nothing "perfect" about her marriage to Dustin Carlyle. Once upon a time, things might have been very close to happy, but moving to Senoia and settling down had been the end of romance for Astrid Hargrave. Something about Dustin had once said he wanted to travel the world, or at least see more than his little neck of the woods... but she had been wrong. She had been so,Ā so wrong.Ā
"I--" Her voice wasn't meek, but there was a quaver of sadness as her own struggling ceased. "I tried to tell you. I've been trying, I thought you'd see, I thought-- I just thought... I thought..." She sniffed, "Stupid, stupid, stupid."Ā Ā
Astrid allowed herself to be pulled, shakily standing on her feet while trying to rub her face with her free hand.
"I don't want to go down there. Please, please -- Griffin, don't make me. Don't. Don't." A beat passed, "And don't tell Dustin."
He shrugged, deciding that arguing with her over nothing was pointless when they had bigger problems to deal with. The last time he had seen Astrid like this was in New York City when nobody was married or tied down by anything. Under different circumstances, it would have been refreshing; he would have encouraged it. She needed to loosen up again, being in Senoia had changed her to a point where she was a completely different person. Senoia had that effect on people, and that was why he was there.Ā
It scared him, but at that moment, not as much as the wine glass flying in his general direction.Ā
"Jesus ā" he ducked to the side to avoid being hit by the glass or itās shattered pieces. "Christ. What the fuck, Astrid?ā
She was taking it too far. Griffin stepped over a few unopened boxes to closed the distance between them and grab her wrist so she wouldnāt take a swing at him with the bottle or wander off. āTell me whatās wrong or else Iāll take you to Dustin.ā
Reminiscing was something of a double-edged sword. On one hand, Astrid could look into her past and remind herself that she hadn't always been so sad and shut-in... on the other, doing that caused her to realize that there had been chances for her life to turn out differently. If she had said things differently or taken steps she hadn't dreamed of, Astrid might have been -- She might have beenĀ what?Ā Someone else. Someone else entirely; someone happy.Ā
Launching a glass at Griffin wasn't the least she could do, but it wasn't the most either. In her current state, Astrid wanted nothing more than to lash out, to scream and hit and attempt to drown out her sorrows with noise. Unfortunately, she couldn't; actually, she couldn't even fend Griffin off when he had grabbed her wrists. She couldn't do anything, but that wasn't new... was it?
Any mention of Dustin caused her rage to swell and even a shock of fear to jolt through her. Dustin was the last person she wanted to see, especially when she was trying so damn hard.
"DUSTIN IS WHAT'S WRONG!"Ā
She struggled -- in vain, inevitably -- but the force of the tears dripping down her face and the alcohol that slowed her reaction time proved to be too much. Eventually, Astrid just tugged her arm as if Griffin might feel sory enough to let go of her wrist.
"You stupid,Ā stupid,Ā stupid boy."Ā
"That's what I've been trying to tell you for months -- years. That's what's wrong. That's what's been wrong. Everything is wrong.Ā Stupid, stupid,Ā stupid."

Raising his hands in surrender, he started walking towards her in a non-threatening, nonchalant way. āIām sorry,ā he said, but didnāt cower down, although the thought of leaving her alone to go and get Dustin did pass through his mind.Ā
Her words hit him like a punch to the sternum. Flinching from the invisible hit, he ducked under a rafter to follow her. āI know the answer but Iām going to ask anyway. Are you okay?āĀ
"Shut up." She spun the wine glass between her fingers by it's stem and pursed her lips. "Don't apologize if you don't mean it. It's insulting to both of us."
The question he asked was an important one, but it took Astrid a bit of thinking. Instead of answering right away, she turned sluggishly and headed in the direction of her belongings. Somewhere, there was a half-empty bottle of wine. Somewhere.
After she had staggered about long enough and had found the bottle, Astrid looked to the glass in her hands and gave it a good once over.
"Hmm--"Ā She wasn't considering much, though, for she launched the glassĀ Ā -- one of a very expensive set -- across the room. It shattered only seconds later.
"Nope."
"Friends," he quirked his head to one side, then the other. "Enemies. They can be interchangeable." There were two extremes to drunk Astrid: New York City or Senoia. Senoia drunk Astrid happened to be more sullen than the former. It was terrifying, but for once he was the only sober one in that situation so he had to step up the responsibility.
Griffin approached her as though she were a wild animal, carefully and quietly. āOkay, I donāt think you should be up here,ā he extended a hand towards her. āYou might fall down the stairs.ā
"No, they can't." Astrid was evidently not in the mood for whatever it was Griffin wanted to sell, but the haze over her mind prevented her from articulating what she felt. "You know that."
Something about the way Griffin said sheĀ shouldn'tĀ be in the attic caused Astrid to snap, to saunter away from him as a form of sheer indignation. "Excuse me, but this is my house! This is mine and I can go wherever I want,Ā thank you very much."Ā
"I'm here to findĀ myĀ music, to drinkĀ myĀ wine, and to be alone. Don't you have a friend you'd like to take to the barn or something?"
Astrid & Arabella
I donāt think youāre borinā though.
Really? Youāre definitely the best. I canāt wait for these lessons. Then I can use that dusty piano at our house and show off to my mom.
That sounds perfect. Iām sure weāll talk before then too, and if anythinā changes we can figure it all out.
You may be the only one. But, thank you.
Where did you say you work? I can drop by today and we can iron out the rest of the details. Don't worry about paying me -- being able to teach is gift enough.Ā
"Sorry about the mess. I was up here a few days ago and didnāt think anyone would come up so I kind of just⦠left it?" He kicked at a few scattered papers littering the attic floor, remnants of his life before the city. "Iāll clean up after, alright?"Ā
Of course, luck would have it that he'd make his way up to the attic. Astrid was only surprised that he didn't have company. Though her first instinct was to run, he was blocking the way and there was still an open bottle of wine sitting somewhere in that musty room.Ā
"A friend...?"
"I'm... very glad you're making friends. How lucky." Drunk -- no, tipsy? Yes, that's what she was. And she was angry -- beyond that. Such a combination coupled with the anxiety medication she had been using proved to be a little more than she could handle.
"Oh,Ā noooo. Don't worry about cleaning up. This? This is nothing. The whole house may as well look like this." Her face screwed up, "I mean, this is my part of the house. This's where my music is. This's where... everything is. Except Faust. Even -- Even Rosalind is up here somewhere. There's no mess. This is mine. All of it's mine. Except what's not."Ā

Barn?Ā
I donāt think anybody can help me nowĀ but our Lord and Saviour, Jesus Christ.Ā But by all means, give it a shot.Ā
Itās a trainwreck, thatās what it is. This is what happens when you involve the government in your personal affairs ā a shit ton of paperwork. Thereās either something wrong with me or something wrong with her and right now, the evidence points towards me. I wish it didnāt happen though. Everything was fine until we decided it would be a great idea to have a kid.Ā
Alright. Sing me a song and I wonāt put you through an entire Bon Jovi album.
Perfect.
In my experience, "our lord and savior" is usually busy with other things. I don't see the point in wasting His time, especially when He and I don't believe in one another.
If it was a trainwreck, I'm afraid you would be dead. Life goes on. You adapt. Would you trade those few moments you had with Anne-Marie for the sake of your marriage?Ā
There's nothing wrong with you, Griffin. There never was.
Would you like to hear something old or something new?Ā

Oh, cāmon. If I can, you can.Ā
Thatās cheatinā, you canāt do that. If you want help though, Iām not horrible at bakinā.Ā
I-- No, no, that won't be necessary. But I appreciate the offer? I hope you can understand, it's... Pride, more than anything else.Ā
We all have our vices.Ā
You're Roxanne. I'm Astrid. It's nice to meet you.Ā
When youāre in love, youāre so happy that you want to tell people about it. But now I have to censor myself. You need to protect the happiness you have.
Astrid & Arabella
I sāpose so. I think youād be a loveable mom though. Iām sure your kids would absolutely adore you.
Itās true! I definitely owe ya. Iāll even pay ya for them too. I can go home and see how much lessons go for and we can work it out together.
Tuesdays and Thursdays āfore work? I can definitely do that. Just let me know when youāre willinā to start, and Iāll be there.
I may be a little too boring for that, dear.Ā
There's no need to pay me. I'm just happy to be teaching, or... to at least have some outlet for music again. If nothing else, it should provide an excuse to have the piano properly tuned.Ā
I'm willing to start... Two weeks from today? Is that reasonable?

⦠Fine. Okay, but not here. If Dustin or my mother overhears, Iāll never hear the end of it from basically everyone in Senoia.Ā
Iāll tell you this right now though, I can sum up every stage of my marriage with a set of three pretty words. Three pretty words can change everything. We started off with āI love youā, then ended with āI hate youā and in the middle there was āShe is goneā. Now itās, āshe said noā.Ā
Did you hear that?
I caved. I called her. A week into September, I told her it worked, that being in Senoia to reflect made me realize that I was a moron for putting distance between us when Anne - Marie died ā for pushing the only remaining good thing in my life away from me. I said if we scrapped this divorce idea, we could make this work and she saidĀ no.Ā
So maybe youāre wrong and Iām exactly who I think I am.
Itās not a joke. If you laugh, Iāll take personal offence.
If not here, then where?Ā
Griffin... Oh, Griffin.Ā
Let me help you.Ā Please.Ā Let me help you...Ā because I can't help myself.
Marriage is, no -- marriage isn't this lovely, fairy-tale thing. It's monstrous, Griffin, and you shouldn't base your worth on the fact that Lilly is determined not to make things work. Maybe... in some bittersweet way, this is for the best? Bitter because it's over and sweet because it happened, yes?Ā
I need to go to the store. Come with me. We don't have to talk, we can listen to tapes and you can think on your story.

I'm not suited for cooking.
I should just... I don't know. I should go to town, buy some pastries, and pass them off as my own. That's what I should do -- that's what IĀ willĀ do.Ā
