The last ship for Marley left before the sunset began to grace your office. It was a supply line and rotation of people for the recon mission disguised on a Hizuru ship. A mistake had been made along the line, and crates almost got left behind. An afternoon clusterfuck on top of your already tumultuous week. Management of the Marley mission had been your responsibility since the beginning; you had a routine. Folks helped out plenty, but it was essential to keep a careful eye on everything to ensure a smooth operation. Paradis was learning new things very quickly; multitasking became a highly coveted skill. One that resulted in extreme exhaustion at times, but with the pressure of adjusting to 100 years of technological advancement, it was inevitable.
There was another month till the next shipping deadline. Before the docks were built, a month might have felt like an eternity. Now, it was as though the ships themselves were breathing down your neck. Things seemed to move at a breakneck pace these days. It felt like something was on the horizon, but you couldn’t make it out. You sighed, finding it increasingly harder to focus. It wasn’t until someone knocked on the door that you realized you were staring blankly at the wall. You blinked back to reality. “Come in,” you called out.
The door opened to reveal a familiar face.
“Eren,” you were surprised, “I didn’t know you were still here. I figured you’d want to return to the Walls as soon as possible.”
“Yeah,” he said, running his fingers through his hair, “I had some things to take care of.”
“Well, I’d love to chat, but I’m close to being caught up.”
He stood in the doorway as if contemplating something. You catch his eye, and the way he’s looking at you makes your hair stand on end. He hummed and turned for the door.
“Fine. Don’t take too long. I’ll be down the hall,” he gestured to his right and strolled out.
You almost told him not to wait on your behalf but decided against it. Eren had a way of pulling you into petty arguments when you had shit to do. It wasn’t worth the risk. Once his footsteps faded, the silence engulfed you after hours of bustling and shouting in all directions. You stared at the door for a minute; your mind was somehow racing with thoughts but also wholly blank. You sighed, then returned to your paperwork. You were going to finish this tonight.
Once the final stack of inventory papers was organized, you blew out the remaining lit candles, then gathered your things. You weren’t sure how much time had passed since Eren dropped by. You figured he would be gone by now but went to check anyway. You walked through the moonlit hall until you came across Hange’s office. The door was cracked, and Eren was inside, his head resting on her desk. You almost felt bad waking him up. It’s been more than a year since his last return home. You reached out to shake his shoulder.
“Eren,” You called, “I’m done.”
He woke slowly, blinking hard and rubbing his temples. You waited until he sat up to continue.
“We can head out; I’m sure you’re as eager to get back as I am.”
“Yeah,” he said, “about that…”
You raised an eyebrow, preemptively irritated at whatever he was about to say.
“The last train left a while ago. I was gonna tell you when I came in, but you didn’t want to be disturbed.”
“You could have said something!” you shouted, then recalled his momentary pause before leaving your office earlier. “I saw you think about it! How are we supposed to get back?!” You’ve never hidden your irritation with Eren, which he seemed keen to earn as often as possible. The idea of having to sleep in your office was not ideal.
“There’s an original train in one of the warehouses, still on the tracks,” he said, calm as ever. Which irritated you even more. “It’s small enough for a single person to run it. They became obsolete when the railways were finished, and dock construction began.”
“Right, to haul more supplies,” you said. Then you sighed. Might as well have one more bump in the road. “Well, at least we have an option. Let’s get to it, then. No reason to linger.” You move to let him lead and lock Hange’s office on your way out.
