I’ve seen people call Sormik “boring,” maybe because they don’t have a lot of internal conflict (I would argue that they do have internal conflict, it’s just not always the most obvious because they read each other so well and they solve things relatively quietly– the break up arc being the single exception).
I’m not saying it’s wrong to find them boring or anything, I just… obviously I find them fascinating, and I’m trying to articulate why exactly. Because I get it. From start to finish, they’re childhood friends, partners, boyfriends, really– and that doesn’t really change over the course of the game (I’d argue there are subtle differences, but you see what I’m saying.) And there’s not really any interpersonal conflict between them (again, except for the breakup) So from that perspective, yeah, their relationship is kind of boring.
But I think what really makes the ship interesting to me is that there are so many things through the story tearing them apart, and yet they themselves remain a unit. Not even “each other’s most important person” like Colette and Lloyd (though they are that) but… they really feel like a single person (which others have already commented on, and which is also alluded to in titles like “Fish and Water”. It’s not as simple as “childhood friends understand each other innately and that’s that”. It’s their shared desire to share everything together that lets them understand each other. It takes a lot to separate them, and NOTHING keeps them apart– not races, not centuries, not Sorey possibly losing his memories of Mikleo. It’s not always easy, but they kinda make it LOOK easy.
I don’t know what I’m saying or if this makes sense. Just… some thoughts.
