Reminder that Zog is so fucking ugly. The ugliest guy who ever existed
His ugliness actually scares me
Imagine a 7'0 feet tall creature that eats humans and has unnatural yellow/white eyes and he is so fucking ugly. That makes him a lot more scary. Totally unnatural
Aaw… I kinda like his ugly mug now (or maybe I’m biased by my own artistic depictions of him). As far as SoM/W orcs go, he’s not the ugliest of the bunch in my opinion. I mean, at least he’s not horribly boated, malformed, infested, diseased, &/or pierced to the point he can’t even sit or lay in certain positions, so I guess what I’m getting at hear is that the Fugly Factor™ is relative. Personally, I generally find someone like Krimp the Enchanted to be less traditionally good-looking than Zog, but I totally can see Zog being off-putting in that ‘decrepit bird of prey’ or ‘pale deep sea horror’ way 🤔
I KNOW I have issues because none of that (7ft tall, human eater, glowing yellow eyes, ugly sob) is an immediate turn off 😭 It's all about personality imo.
The Sequel: The Inline Tooltip Translator Plugin! (for AO3)
After the recent influx of attention this work received thanks to some amazing AO3 people sharing it around, I felt inspired to make the concept even easier to use by making a plugin! This will mean no more manually coding each translation in the HTML! It will (hopefully) be as simple as inserting a link, where you highlight the text you wish to include a translation for, click the "insert translation" button, paste your translation, click confirm, and voila! It should (theoretically) be inserted into the rich text editor with all the HTML automatically set up in the background! I'm attempting to make this plugin myself (my first time making a plugin, so please be patient haha) with the guidance of a couple of my friends who are much better at coding than I am.
My goals to accomplish for version 1:
Users will be able to highlight / select text inside the rich text editor.
Clicking the insert tooltip button will initialize the interface popup for inserting translations (or anything else you might need a tooltip for).
It will have extracted the part of the text the user highlighted and display it alongside a input box for adding the translation.
Users can type or paste the translation into the box, then click confirm.
The plugin will insert the code for a tooltip around the selected text in the background.
My goals for *possible* later versions:
Translation History Part 1 - Saving your translation history by exporting it as as JSON file, for those pesky times that you need to go back and edit a chapter or something.
Translation History Part 2 - Reverse engineering/extracting your translation history from existing chapters; using unique identifiers generated each time you previously made a translation, it would be able to read that back from AO3 to remake the translation data JSON in the event your computer dies or your file gets deleted or something... sorry if that phrasing is confusing. I'm not sure how else to phrase it.
Paragraph to Footnote linking - ↴ paragraph markers with your translations so if you prefer footnotes, you can link between the paragraph and the author's notes at the end of the chapter with ↱ return links! No more scrolling for footnotes! Easy bouncing back and forth!
Footnote wrangling - the ability to export all the translations you added to a chapter into one nice footnote file.
Tooltip CSS styler - The ability to generate custom workskin CSS for your tooltip format with simple, (so you don't have to have it styled like my default version from the previous chapter). It will be able to be styled in a way to match YOUR unique style!
Please note:
I plan for this to be ENTIRELY locally hosted on your own machine once installed.
Your data will stay self-contained to your own machine.
This will NOT require any remote cloud servers or anything like that to run.
You will NOT need to sign up for any sort of account to use the plugin.
And it will ONLY be using old-school extension coding methods and absolutely NO AI integration.
What I have working so far:
I've successfully added button on the end of the text editor button menu! It's ugly but it's there! And it properly returns whatever text you have selected to an alert box! One step closer! I plan to add custom icon art for the button or something. I haven't decided yet. Eh. I'll figure it out!
Please feel free to follow along in this development journey!
The button has a unique look now! Though I'm not entirely sold on it... Ugh... Feedback is welcome. (I know I'm probably worrying about stuff in the wrong order, and visuals should come after functionality, I just can't help myself. And I know the color is an odd choice, but I love orange okay? 😭) Maybe I could make the color of it responsive to match each user's custom tooltip CSS down the road. 🤔 Now that'd be something! Just another idea to add to the pile...
After some feedback, I've made some edits to the button design! I think this is much clearer and easier to read now, even at a small scale!
I know this is lame and not much to share, but adding this took me all freaking day because I was trying really hard to not get it to float overtop of the AO3 interface, but instead sit off to the side so you could use this tooltip plugin next to your writing. But I cannot for the life of me figure it out... BUT, at least the sidebar exists now and clicking the previously created button now opens it! (Unfortunately, I also cannot close it yet without just refreshing the page 😅)
The sidebar has the basic UI implemented! And I even got it to (somewhat) color match the default theme colors of AO3 by using "inherit" in the CSS (at least the background and text). I thought that would make it feel more cohesive for as many users as possible. I am personally big on night-mode skins, but I know not everyone likes them. But because I'm using "inherit" the style may even somewhat work with custom workskins! Though I haven't tested that, so don't quote me on it. I still need to add the close button (as the only way to refresh it is to refresh the page), then I think the functionality would be next… but let's be honest. I probably will obsess over the styling first until I get that just right… Ah, and I still want to figure out how to make it push Ao3's UI aside, not have the plugin sit on top. Still working on that!
OH MY GOSH IT'S HAPPENING! The beta version of the plugin is ready for testing! I am just prepping the files for release on github, and I'll be able to share that shortly! (I did have to make one code alteration that does not show in the following screenshots, as apparently AO3 strips "id" out of "<span>", so for trying to set up your translations made with this tool for the future footnote wrangling features, I instead now insert an anchor "<a>" and put the generated tooltip info in "name" for that. That will allow the plugin to generate a record of all your translations (locally) so if you ever edit a chapter, want to add footnotes, etc, that the plugin can handle it for you with one or two easy clicks. (If this doesn't make sense don't worry too much about it. It's just backend stuff for troubleshooting and to make sure the tool will be able to identify tooltip translations and format them into a nice copy-and-paste-able format in later iterations of this plugin. See the footnote information in the previous chapter for an example.)
--- with that said... anyone interested in beta testing? 👀

Me. Wrote a 200k word orcfic. Start working on the sequel. Get distracted by an 11k side story. Finish side story. Ah! Stop getting distracted! Yes. Okay. Back to the sequel. Got distracted by another side story. HELP! Can't stop thinking of offshoots. The sequel! Must write the sequel! Oh no... write worldbuilding essay for my orcfic FOCUS DAMMIT Then another side story. And another... And ANOTHER! AND ANOTHER!!! NOOOOO STOP! The sequel! Don't forget the sequel!
I kind of wish we could assign teams to each of our characters, rather than joining one as the artist. Instead of "gaining points" for a team as an artist, you'd be "dealing damage". If they make a revenge piece, then it's almost like a battle just between those two chosen characters. You could make a whole thing about characters becoming "Artfight Rivals" as the revenge chain grows. If your revenge is directed to someone on the same team as the character of yours that was attacked, that could be a "traitor." The team with the most damage at the end "loses" but really, they just got the most art, so is it even really a loss? 😅

There would definitely need to be some scoring logic ironed out, but it could add some fun variety.

Finally some oc content on this blog. Dûsh and Gogat, being blood-brothers, share several issues. Dûsh doesn't like to admit it, but Gogat did pick up some of those toxic traits from him; it's an uncomfortable truth, that makes Dûsh question his role as the big brother and even his self-worth, as he feels partially responsible for who Gogat later turned into. At the same time, he's mature enough to understand that Gogat is his own uruk and could have made different choices... But still, the guilt remains.
Template under the cut. From @idolkilling
Ha! I love this! Toxic orc characters are so fun!
Had to do my own too :D
Ar-Tashk - 19/25 - He fat-fingered his way through filling out this worksheet. It's hard to write with hands the size of a human's torso okay?! He doesn't even know what this is for anyways. But he did it to humor Alaesia since she got roped into it as well.
Zathra - 16/25 - Self-righteous lil bastard. He started out with blotches to fill in the squares, but when he saw Ar-Tashk's worksheet and thought better of himself. So he erased his blob marks and went with nice sleek "X"s instead. The fact his score is the lowest of the bunch makes him puff out his chest.
Barbaurak - 18/25 - He thinks he is supposed to fill in every square on the board. Zathra told Bar that he should fill in the full line for "emotional instability" but Bar just punched Zathra instead.
Alaesia - 19/20 - Hated every moment of this awful self-introspective practice, especially comparing the results to the others' because it made her feel as though she is far too similar to orcs for her liking. She thinks Zathra's score ought to be WAY higher, but there's not enough squares in the manipulation category to cover how bad he can be.
This was way more fun than it ought to have been haha!

Please feel free to follow along in this development journey!
can someone clear something up for me regarding núrn(en)
okay so as i understand the region as a whole is called núrn, and the part of núrn featured in shadow of mordor is the mainland and is also just called núrn. However, the sea is called the sea of núrnen, and the island featured in shadow of war is the isle of núrnen, right? Or are núrn and núrnen just interchangeable? It almost seems like nurnen is used to mean 'of nurn' in some cases like the nurnen fishery, but then the sea of nurnen would be called the nurnen sea. Idk i just cant seem to find a clear answer, maybe im overthinking it, but i thought id ask in case someone here has an answer.
Well "nen" means water in Elvish, so I think Núrn is the region, and Núrnen is specifically the Sea of Núrn.
So, yes, "Núrnen Sea" or "Sea of Núrnen" are tautologies, but those are very common in multilingual geographical names. For example, "The La Brea Tar Pits" is a tautology, since "La Brea" is Spanish for "The Tar".
Like Torpenhow Hill means Hill Hill Hill Hill!
Tor (Old English/Norse)
Pen (Celtic)
How (Norse)
Hill (Modern English)
Been thinking abt Ratbag the Coward again lately and it's baffling to me that he really is almost 6 feet tall. He looks so tiny in comparison to the other characters that it tricks me, 5'3, into thinking I would be at eye level with him. I would not. This vexes me.
Know what you mean! I'm exactly as much shorter than Ratbag as he's shorter than Talion: 5'2" < 5'10" < 6'6" !
Ratbag is almost 6 feet tall?! WHAT? Since when?!
Everyone in Lotr (except specifically short races) is EXTREMELY tall. Elves are, on average, at least 6 and a half feet tall.
This terrifies, fascinates, and awakens something inside me 🤣
We're talking about if Ratbag were standing upright, not hunched over the way he normally carries himself right???
Well yeah, his slouching makes him lose a couple inches depending on how low he is on the Ratbag mood indicator (I noticed watching him that he shrinks down when upset or nervous, and stands more upright when confident), but his full height is estimated to be 5'10
Oh for sure, he definitely let's his emotions change his stature. But, even then, here I was thinking he was still just a small fellow among his fellow orcs (and I suppose that isn't wrong)😭But DAMN, even HE would tower over me in that case. All those other orcs in the games must be freaking UNITS.
