There is a piece of advice I forget to mention sometimes, and that's called "Let's do it the way that makes sense to you." There's a million reasons why the schedule is the schedule. Whether it's actor availability, light, or art department movement, the schedule is threading a needle to make the work pan out for all departments. But then comes the dreaded Director phrase "Okay but I don't want to do that. I want to do this."
And no amount of explaining why we can't do the schedule the way they're hoping, will help them understand why it's a bad idea. And that's not to say I'm being precious about my schedule or stubborn about why things need to go my way. I love Director input and welcome help with adjusting it to what it should be to help accomplish the vision. But if we need to do sunrise shot first, and the mid day shot at mid day, no amount of dancing or prayer will make the sun rise at 12 noon.
But, to force the issue is almost always a non starter. The easiest solution in this situation is to go with their plan, because it's a plan they understand, and things will almost always go faster rather than trying to drag a horse to water. If they have their head around the creative, and they're satisfied with the consequences, then go with their plan. It means other departments scramble, but ultimately the person you work for is happier. Two recent examples this year. Had a commercial in a small location, that required us to move furniture in whatever room we went into, and if we started in Room #1, we could have fit all the furniture from Room 2 & 3, and easily pre-lit the rooms, and moved between all location. And the first set required sunrise. "But I don't want to do that. What if we went in this room and started facing away from the windows." "Okay, but we'll miss sunrise, and that's why we're here so early." "No it'll be fine. We start in this room and I'll get all the shots I need, then it'll still be dark out." "We won't. it'll be 10am at that point, and we can't light any other locations because we can't take the furniture out of them yet because it has nowhere to go." "It'll be fine. This is all more important and this is what works best for me." So, we shot in his order, it didn't matter that we missed sunrise, that it was bright as hell for our morning shot, and we had to wait an hour and 1/2 to film in any other spots. The Director got what he needed, he felt we accomplished his goals, and whatever else we got, he was just happy with. Now, will he be happy later on in the edit? We'll see. But the plan worked for him, so it worked for the project.
But this doesn't just happen on small budget stuff. I just finished a 8 figure job where we had stunts, closed locations with hard outs, giant special effects, and tons of crew waiting around, for the Director to spend 5 hours shooting inserts and extreme close ups of the scene. Because he knew if he could sell that, then he could sell the movie. To him, the large set ups and special effects were just window dressing. Sometimes the easiest route, is to just say "Sure boss. Sounds good."

The flip side to "I just want to hire someone who believes in my dream." is "I just wanted to be paid and respected as a crew member." 9 times out of 10, anyone who's every stressed that if I want a job, I have to be as dedicated to their project as they are, was someone who wanted me to work for minimum wage or free on it. If you want me to believe in what you're doing, you need to value and pay me to do so.

I don't see people talking about this so today is the 110th anniversary of the Triangle Shirtwaist Factory fire, in where the factory owners locked working women and girls inside to "eliminate the risk of theft" (in reality it was too keep them from taking breaks), which resulted in the gruesome deaths of 123 mostly immigrant women and girls and 23 men, many of whom jumped to their deaths from the ninth floor either in a panicked attempt to escape or in order to die quickly. There were reports that some of the workers were on fire already as they jumped.
The eighth floor of the building was able to telephone the tenth floor to warn them about the fire, but the factory on the ninth floor where these women and girls labored had no such communication and such warning.
The factory owners were criminally charged with manslaughter for actions that contributed to the mass deaths but acquitted. However, this tragedy led to mass sympathy to the labor movement, and unions spurred on safety regulations that passed in New York state and eventually the entire country, and activists were able to reduce child labor in the process.
This tragedy is a reminder that has been forgotten in the 110 years since: every safety regulation-- every scrap of paperwork contributing to the hundreds of pages of red tape people like to complain about--every word of it was written in the blood of a laborer.

They were discouraged from breaks because they were actively trying to unionize, and bosses felt that keeping them from unsupervised contact would prevent them from joining the garment workers' union.
This is why unions are important. This is why today, right now, the biggest companies in America are trying to squash unionization of their laborers and why those workers are fighting so hard to unionize.
@tikkunolamorgtfo did a great write-up a few years ago about the aftermath of the Triangle Shirtwaist fire, and I highly recommend reading it (and anything else you can about the fire). It is painfully relevant still and it's incredibly important women's, Jewish, immigrants', and workers' history.

Back when I started out, it was constantly drilled into our heads "Don't sit down, don't rest, always keep moving." "Never let them see you sit still." because then they question why they're paying you if you're not working. Always be on your feet. I can count 4 times my body has taken me down, for a week or two on end. Thankfully usually at the end of my job, but still, absolutely collapse. This last job was my longest in a long time and completely stressful every day. But I made sure to take my moments of rest, take my weekends where I could and just relax. I missed a party or two, missed an adventure. But if it's between that and missing paying the bills, I'll take care of myself first.

That article was horrific, and I hope all his victims get the resolution and closure that they deserve. Film, TV and well, literature too, are full of some deeply disturbed people. At least I can promise you Val and I are sane. Well, I am. Val is... eehhhh.

Between this and striking down no compete clauses, it's been a good month for the US worker. Or at least, getting better.
The slowdown.
I hope you guys are well. I hope things are doing alright where you are and you've found your way during this time. I'm hoping that this is momentary, and next year production starts up in full swing. But damn, is it sparse right now. It's not just you, it's not just you being singled out. it's world wide and it's going to take some time for Productions and Networks to figure out what the new model should be. Things have been hit or miss since the beginning of last year, and this year productions more often than not have been canceling jobs after just starting up. Either losing financial backing, or just pulling up stakes and moving to a right to work state and paying out even less. Save what you can, don't ever feel bad about taking a survival job. You gotta live, and living costs money. Just making it through this time and we'll see you on set. -Griffin & Val
