It is perfectly ok for a beta fish to live in a bowl, as long as its AT LEAST 2.5 gallons (which isn’t even a lot, when you think about it) and you clean it regularly.

1. They don’t heat consistently

2. The circular shape stresses them out and makes them feel exposed

3. No pet store sells a 4-5 gallon bowl (the minimum size to keep a stable cycle)

4. They do need water flow to stop harmful bacteria from growing (stagnant water is always bad, there’s a reason they jump out of puddles in the wild)

5. In a proper sized tank the water flow will not be strong enough to stress a bettas. Or even better, sponge filters create very little current and are ideal for low current fish or fish fry

6. Bettas are carnivores/Insectivors meaning their diet is entirely protein based and their waste is extra good at producing ammonia and breeding bacteria. In a traditional tank or pond this isn’t an issue because it’s diluted by the volume of water and the flow of water. Bowls don’t have a very large capacity and the circular shape doesn’t allow for proper water flow (the same reason they don’t heat properly) and ESCPECIALLY with out a filter causes areas of ‘dead water’ where toxic bacteria and compounds collect.

I’m sorry but please don’t spread half informed pet care if you haven’t done your research, and especially if you don’t have/haven’t had the animal in question. I personally have five bettas a few of which are over two years old (a minor miracle considering they’re pet store fish) and have raised several from fry to adulthood (betta fry are notoriously picky and fragile) and I barely feel comfortable giving advice for anything more than the basics.

Hotdogs are not an appropriate prey for your snake.

Not even as a first meal to get them eating for the first time.

People with multiple snakes tend to find a feeder breeder, who specifically raises prey species, or they breed their own food. Most common available prey species can very easily be bred at home, ranging from meal worms to rodents to chicks.

I've been breeding my own rats for years, which is the staple species in my house.

Let’s all just take a long look at the following two images. The top one is how a healthy dog should look. 

Brachycephalic breeds such as in the second image include dogs such as the French Bulldog, American Bulldog, Pug, Pekingese, Shihtzu, Boxers, and more. You may have heard smack about them previously or not at all, or you may be fully on the brachycephalic bandwagon still. I just want to refresh everyone’s memories a bit on why these are such horrible breeds and why they should not be continue to be bred. I have seen, every day for almost 3 weeks straight, dozens of deformed brachycephalic dogs being AI’d, being monitored during pregnancy, and having puppies delivered by C-section. I am sick of seeing this, and so this post is born.

Brachycephalic dogs commonly (and by commonly I mean almost every single brachycephalic dog) suffer from a syndrome called Brachycephalic Airway Syndrome. This syndrome involves the following, to varying degrees:

1. Narrow nostrils and overgrown bones within the nasal cavities (or, in other words, normal sized bones in a horribly shortened face) which obstructs airflow.

2. A trachea (i.e. windpipe) that is too small.

3. Everted laryngeal saccules (stage 1 of laryngeal collapse*) which can obstruct airflow.

4. A soft palate that is too long and obstructs airflow within the larynx.

These deformities translate into the cute, snorting, snoring, wheezing, overheating dogs that we all dote on. However, as if that’s not enough, these dogs can also have a multitude of other problems such as enlarged tonsils, vomiting and acid reflux, *full collapse of the larynx, jaw malformations resulting in dental malformations, skin disease, eye disease, heat intolerance, and inter-vertebral disc disease. They often require corrective surgery at a young age, and even then are not going to be completely healthy.

In other words, they’ve got it real bad. And people are still breeding them even when they are showing clear signs of anatomical and heritable abnormalities.

IMPROVE them.

Breed OUT the brachycephalic issues. Yes, it’s bad. Don’t get me wrong. It’s not good. But it’s a bit arrogant of you to assume ALL these breeds have the problems you listed. Each individual animal is different.

I have a boxer.

His name is Vinny. He’s got a bit of a longer muzzle than some boxers I have seen. And he has NONE of the issues OP listed. None.

English bulldog: (Yes, a purebred English bulldog, from Finland)

I got texted by a friend late last night and they were super worried bc they went to a party where the host used feeder goldfish as decorations in little bowls! I felt so sad for those poor fish!

I offered to take them and they drove me 4 little goldfish to me late at night and I quickly set up my 36 for them to quarantine in for the time being!

(It’s not much but it’ll do for the time being, and I’ll deff be going out to buy them some silk plants today)

The poor things are so tiny I have to crush up pellets for them!

Unfortunately when I checked on them today one of them didn’t make it through the night, but the other three are still trucking along! I’m gonna give it some time before I try naming them haha.

But seriously it’s 2019. Why is it still seen as ok to use living animals as decorations? Especially if you don’t have any plans on what to do with them afterwards? Goldfish need a lot of space and heavy filtration and a bowl smaller than my hand is not fit for anything to live in. Idc if they cost a couple of cents each, they’re living animals that can hurt and suffer and need proper care. It boils my blood that people think it’s ok to do this
