Baby Getting A Chest X-Ray
This device is used to immobilize young children in order to get their x-rays, when a child is very sick and an x-ray is needed to diagnose them. It does NOT hurt them at all. Taking multiple images of a moving baby, in order to get the least blurry one is more harmful because then the child is exposed to radiation for a longer period of time.
This device, which again does NOT hurt them, allows for a technologist to grab chest images of a child as fast and as efficiently as possible. The children may sometimes cry, and get frustrated but only because they are not familiar with this device. This is typically used for babies under 25 Ibs or around 2 years old. If interested you can hear how it works from a technologist himself (What He Has To Say) (More Information)
I saw just the top of the first one, and my first thought was “Why is that baby in a blender?!”
First thought: “it’s baby Augustus Gloop!”
Second thought: “omg the poor behbeh!”
Third thought “omg Andi really? A blender?”
Blender baby is better than my original thought of "are babies the new liquid? I thought cats were the new liquid"

Happy Star Wars Day…

Do not mistake hepatic triads in the liver for Tusken Raiders.

Which should I learn to do?
Crochet or knit?
Looks like it's going to be crochet!

Crochet or knit?
I dreamed a dream in time gone by, when grades were high and fucks worth giving. I dreamed no test would make me cry, I dreamed that curves would be forgiving. Then I was young and unprepared, and A’s were made and used and wasted. There were no extensions to be begged, no nights unslept, no effort wasted. But the finals come at last, with their laughter soft as thunder, as they tear your grades apart, as they turn your dream to shame.
I studied readings for my pride
They filled my head with endless anger
School took my childhood in its stride
And I was DONE when finals came
But still I dream of my degree
When I will be done with class forever
But there are dreams that cannot be
And there are weeks we cannot weather
I HAD A DREAM COLLEGE WOULD BE
SO DIFFERENT FROM THIS HELL I’M FAILING
So different know from what it seems
Finals have killed the dream I dreamed.
Just replace college with med school and this would be1000% perfection.

Medical Cartoons
We recently received some great medical cartoons from a cartoonist and wanted to share them with you. Check out his medical cartoon site at Medcartoons.com He was even able to make a plague doctor cartoon for us, which we of course have a soft spot for!

NO?
Let’s learn about a not-so-negative word.. Yes, I’m talking about nitric oxide, not no. (If you got whatever I meant :P )
Nitric oxide (NO) is formed from L-arginine in endothelial cells.
NO stimulates guanylate cyclase, increasing cyclic guanosine monophosphate (cGMP) production in target cells; which causes vasodilatation; and inhibits platelet adhesion and aggregation. The highlight of our comic today.
NO is rapidly destroyed by hemoglobin and thus functions as a paracrine hormone. (Accidental poisoning or overdose of a nitrate containing compound may cause methemoglobinemia)
Interesting facts: Intravenous infusion of an arginine analogue that blocks NO production leads to an immediate and substantial rise in blood pressure. This phenomenon suggests that NO is released continually and basally to regulate vascular tone.
Its effect on vascular tone is exploited in the treatment of angina. Nitroglycerin, taken sublingually, acts rapidly to cause vasodilation and decrease anginal pain. It can also be taken prophylactically for angina.

Tomorrow morning’s lecture is on sleep. It’s like they’re daring me…
I'm going to be working in a sleep clinic all summer when ironically all I want to do is sleep all summer.
