You woke up to claws in your hair.
The talons picked through the strands, the sections, pulling out leaves and debris that were promptly tossed into a small pile sitting on the cave floor. A heavy, pained exhale escaped you before you could really think about it, struggling to compose yourself through the haze of sleep and the pain radiating from your poor body.
The creature chittered down at you, nosing at your temple in an effort to soothe before continuing its ministrations as you somehow stayed calm and quiet. It stopped after it was seemingly satisfied, moving to your other side to put itself in your line of sight.
It was less scary now- or maybe that was delirium caused by the exhaustion of excruciating pain. The creature was still terrifying, but strangely ethereal now that you weren’t being chased down in the shrouded forest. Its wings looked soft, held itself with confidence, but it was chittering above you like you deserved to be taken care of.
Your ankle throbbed, pulling a visible wince from you that twisted your face and tensed your shoulders. The creature cooed, running a hand over your hair in another attempt to keep you comforted. It lifted the blanket it had tossed over you and pulled your ankle back into its hands, assessing the excessive dark bruising and concerning swelling.
It made a sound that almost sounded inquisitive, stepping away to grab your satchel and begin digging through it. Your protest was meek and ignored, watching as your satchel was thoroughly dumped out. It grabbed painkillers you kept in the event of a headache or sore muscles, pouring three into its hand and holding them out to you.
Sighing, you swallowed them dry and thumped back into the nest, appreciating silently how it tucked everything back into your bag. That appreciation died as it got in your face, making you wince as the glow of its eyes hurt your own. You pushed back on its shoulders with a hiss of protest, hearing it huff before it grabbed your jaw and made you look at it.
It stared into your eyes, assessing something before leaning forward and pressing its face into the crook of your neck, lips brushing over the junction, promptly sniffing you, “aye!” You furrowed your brows, kicking your good leg and squirming, “get off me!! Creep!” It growled lowly in warning, using the grip on your face to keep you pinned. It didn’t do anything but sniff and leave its smell all over you, invading your nose and your senses.
Finally, after what felt like a very awkward and embarrassing eternity, it got off you and let you go. You stretched your jaw a bit, thoroughly flustered, “what was that for??” With no answer, it stepped away into the bloodied crevice you’d been purposefully ignoring. To your horror, it brought over a clump of raw and bloodied meat, “okay- no- nononono! I am not eating that! I just want to go home!” The creature tilted its head, pausing with an annoyed chittering sound and eating the meat itself. It made you gag.
It swiped the blood off its claws onto the cloak it wore and grabbed your satchel, tossing it on top of you for you to carry before scooping you up into its arms. You wished it didn’t have to fly you home, but if it got you there? Whatever.
The creature went slow, gliding elegantly above the large trees below. The wind tangled through your hair and up your skin, a feeling that was strangely soothing. You stared up at the creature for a moment, taking in its strangely human face now that you could actually see it. Its eyes glowed still, but somehow it didn’t seem as intense as it had before, like a dull flame flickering in the dead of night.
The flight ended when the creature was sitting you down at the edge of the forest, right on the bottom step of your back porch. It stared down at you for a moment before digging for something under its cloak, hesitantly holding out three of its feathers, the ones you had picked up the day before. Its posture was uncertain and shifty, like this was something important- or embarrassing to do.
It was a startling gesture, almost felt like a courting gift, but you took the feathers despite the little voice in the back of your head telling you to shoo it away. You truly thought they were beautiful, they’d look nice hung up somewhere in your home, “thank you. They’re beautiful.” You offered a grateful smile, well aware of how wonky it looked. The creature looked incredibly proud, feathers puffed up as it leant down to press its forehead to your’s.
Your face warmed, watching it step back and launch itself up into the sky, a streak of gold and red.
“What is my life..” you were in disbelief, wincing as you tried to stand, sitting back down miserably. You needed a doctor.
And a nap.

“What the-“ this was getting ridiculous.
It was any average morning. You were heading out back to take care of your herb garden, ankle in a firm splint to keep it from jostling as you hobbled around on crutches. You startled as you were met with a freshly killed deer carcass sitting on your bottom steps. It was neat and killed cleanly, but it was still like- a whole dead creature that appeared out of nowhere.
This wasn’t the first time either.
It had become a trend, something you expected but still found unnerving. At the start of the week there would be a carcass on your steps, but an item of some kind at the end. You’d received meats of all kinds and anything from shiny things to fabrics.
It was those creatures, they didn’t hide it well.
You were (regretfully) extremely familiar with the scent of the bird, and the killed creatures always had a layer of thin slime across their fur or feathers. Was this like..a peace offering? Or a sign that they think you’re incapable of taking care of yourself? A threat even?
You used what they gave you of course. Food was food and tools were tools, but you hoped you weren’t slowly becoming indebted to them or something.
Maybe you should leave them something in return?..

That’s it for now! Hope you enjoyed!
Have a nice day and stay safe!
