"W-What are you talking about?!" the bounty hunter stammered, looking completely guilty. Whether it was by skill, idiocy, or just dumb luck, Luffy had managed to snag the lookout of the very same brute that had snagged the semikami. "If youâre talking about Live One, that girl with brown hair and the hundred million bounty and the poster saying sheâll only be worth something alive I have NO idea who youâre talking about â HEY! WHATâRE YOU DOING, PUT ME DOWN!!"
The sack was yanked off her head, taking a couple long brown hairs with it.Â
âOUCH!â Vera yelped in protest, but before she could say much more she was pushed roughly by the man who had brought her here. She staggered forward, fell, and landed hard on dank concrete. Thunk! âOw! Itai, itaiâŚ!â
The semikami grit her teeth, indignantly rubbing her sore scalp as she glanced around. From what little she could see of her surroundings, her captor had taken her to an abandoned warehouse of some kind; full of shadows, old and broken crates, the dripping of filthy drops into stagnant pools and the ever-present skitter of rats to and fro across the cold, rough floor. As her eyes adjusted, Vera noticed the shadows of men, too. Lots of them. Nothing Luffy couldnât handle, obviously, but a regular old seventeen year old girl with weird crack abilities she didnât even fully understand yet? Ummm⌠no.
âMmmm? Dare kore?â came a raspy voice. Whoâs this?
Vera heard her name spoken by the brute whoâd brought her here. A soft exclamation went up among those assembled; a feeling of uneasiness came over her as she saw her bounty poster pulled from a stack and passed around.
âOretachiha yutaka ni narimasu!â someone cackled. All she caught was oretachi: âwe.â
Vera quickly got to her feet, pressing her back to an old crate as several converged on her. Sheâd heard that figure â a hundred million, for crying out loud! Why did she even HAVE that large a bounty?! â often enough to know they were talking about the price on her head.Â
Bounty hunters. Â And she didnât even need to breach a language barrier to tell they werenât exactly the donât-resist-and-we-wonât-hurt-you type like Johnny or Yosaku.
More like the wanted-alive-doesnât-mean-undamaged type.
Inner Vange popped up on her shoulder. I think this is the part where you RUN, IDIOT!! her voice of common sense yelled.
âI canât!â Vera muttered to herself anxiously, eyes flickering between the menacing forms that approached her. âItâs too dark!  Odds are more likely Iâd pull a Zoro and get even more lostâŚ!â
But you have to do SOMETHING!
Vera heard a cat call tossed from the back; she grimaced and pressed even further away. Something?! Like what, exactly, if YOUâRE the one with all the smart ideas?!
A big hunter with fists the size of hams and the worst body odor Vera had ever smelled leaned over her. He grinned, showing broken teeth. The semikami cringed back, but tried not to show her fear; people like this could smell fear. It excited them, like blood entices a shark to prey.
âDomo!â the big guy growled.
Vera avoided his eyes, trying not to gag at his breath. âD-DomoâŚâ she replied.
âNamae wa?â Whatâs your name?
The brunette raised an eyebrow at the ground. âHontou? Watashi no namae?â Vera murmured incredulously in broken Japanese. âAnata tachi know watashi no namae!â  You all know my name!
âNnnâŚ!â he purred, sniffing her hair. YesâŚ!
The semikamiâs skin crawled; Veraâs fingernails dug into the crate behind her, too tense to worry about splinters. Luffy, hayaku! she whimpered silently. Cuz if my ace doesnât work Iâm gonna be in DEEP YOGURT!
âKi o tsukete!â Be careful!
Before her dumb courage could abandon her, Vera slapped the smelly manâs hand away and took a full step back, still wary of the other men watching her every move. âMugiwara no Luffy is my senchou!â she warned them, even as her stomach trembled like jelly in terror of what might come next. âWhen he finds out you guys took one of his nakama, heâs gonna kono bu to basu ALL your butts! So hanashiteâ âthat was the word for let me go, right? â âand he might go easy on you!â
She wasnât sure how much got through⌠but Luffyâs name certainly invoked a response.Â
Just not the one she was expecting.
