Four hours later, my manager called, repeating their rude question but laughing instead of being rude. He asked what had actually happened, I explained, he laughed again. My lead and a coworker asked what the call was about. I explained again. They laughed, questioning the timing of their complaint, as that kind of thing usually goes through immediately so either City Hall didn't care or the people in question just sat on things. I agreed with the manager that next time I'd back off with my usual stammering, "I-uh, I don't, I..." kind of response, and went home laughing.
Then I find out that my sister repeated the story (which I texted her) to my mother, so that I come through the door to her saying, "You're an ass!" and telling me I could be fired for that kind of thing, and clearly not having a clue what had actually happened. She started a fight over this. I'm not kidding. I told her I was not the horribly rude, going-to-be-fired good-for-nothing she seemed to think I was, and pointed out that if people who are royal don't have a problem with my behavior (I mean real royalty, from another country, but that's as much as I'll disclose) then I'm pretty sure rude twenty-somethings frustrated that they aren't allowed into a media event and killing time by antagonizing people doing their jobs should be able to deal with me.
In short, I hate when my mother involves herself in things she doesn't know about, and damn is she a joke slayer.
