This is a revival of the ask-jumblr blog (@ask-jumblr) under different management. Check out the guidelines for asks under the cut.
Please remember pirkei avos 1:6: עשה לך רב. People on tumblr are not your rav. A lot of them aren't even Jewish (yet). Beware of halachic advice from strangers.
Newly-added FAQ under the cut. Read it to see if your question has already been answered. If it's there, your ask might not be posted.
For fundamental questions about Judaism check websites such as myjewishlearning.com and jewfaq.org. There's also the /r/Judaism wiki with treasure troves of information.
For "Am I Jewish" questions, please follow this flowchart (wayback machine link for those unable to access imgur). Only if that doesn't answer your question, may you ask here.
The intended purpose of this blog is to take questions that benefit from the participation of lots of jumblrs. Just about anything goes, from/about all forms of Judaism (but not messianic Judaism). The posted asks will be limited to questions only, and statement posts or boost posts will probably not be posted.
If you want to send an ask without it being posted, please state that in the ask.
Anons about The Conflict™ will probably not be posted. Jumblr is Jewish Tumblr first and foremost. This includes zionism vs antizionism questions, as it invariably leads to criticising a group of Jews. Adding on that anons mentioning political affiliations will also no longer be posted for the same reasons.
Feel free to submit your questions, anonymously or not.

Frequently Asked Questions
"Can I call myself Jewish before converting/convert without a community/practice Judaism without converting" - one, two, three, four (in short, no.) You can also check out the #who is a jew tag.
"Can I do ____ before I finish my conversion?" and similar questions that can only be answered by the rabbi you should be working with during your conversion to Judaism, will probably no longer be posted.
FOR stands for Frame Of Reference. It's to help you put a person's comment into context.
Miscellaneous writing advice in the #writing Jewish characters tag.
Yes, I know the lamed (ל) in the profile picture is backwards. I can only assume it's a stylistic choice of the creator.
Anons interested in conversion will need to show at least a modicum of research before they will be posted. Asks about queerness and conversion will be limited from this point on, as these are being asked over and over.
Strange questions that can only be answered by a rav will not be posted.
Please be advised that we are not your therapist. If you are struggling with self worth or worrying that Hashem hates you, please see an appropriate therapist for help and do not submit your question here.
If your ask reads as inflammatory to me, I won't post it. If you've asked something and it wasn't posted, you can try rephrasing.
Jewish music and Israeli music are both found in the #Jewish music tag.
More to be added if needed. If you have any suggestions for the FAQ, feel free to send them in.

Jumblr, when you wash your hands for netilas yadayim after the bathroom, do you first soap your hands or first wash with the washing cup? And does this change if you’re in a public bathroom?
This is assuming the public bathroom has its own washing cup. If you’ve never been in a public bathroom with its own washing cup, please imagine what you would do in such a case.
(Mod, can you please make the below into a poll? Thank you!)
Soap first then netilas yadayim, no difference in a public bathroom
Netilas yadayim first then soap, no difference in a public bathroom
Soap first then netilas yadayim, switched if in a public bathroom
Netilas yadayim first then soap, switched if in a public bathroom
Soap first then netilas yadayim, something else if in a public bathroom
Netilas yadayim first then soap, something else if in a public bathroom
Nuance/results/I have never used a bathroom
Hand washing procedure:
Soap first then netilas yadayim, no difference in a public bathroom
Netilas yadayim first then soap, no difference in a public bathroom
Soap first then netilas yadayim, switched if in a public bathroom
Netilas yadayim first then soap, switched if in a public bathroom
Soap first then netilas yadayim, something else if in a public bathroom
Netilas yadayim first then soap, something else if in a public bathroom
Would you feel deeply upset, indifferent, or sympathetic if you heard that a fellow Jew lit a candle and recited Kaddish for their recently deceased dog in the privacy of their own home?
The traditional Jewish practice is to recite the verse "baruch shem k'vod malchuso l'olam va'ed" in an undertone after reciting the first verse of the shma (except on Yom Kippur). However, I visited a Reform shul wherein it was sung aloud. Why does the Reform movement sing this line aloud?
Additionally, they omitted the entire second paragraph and part of the third paragraph. Why is this the case?
Note that this is not an attack, merely a curiosity since it was different than what I am accustomed to. I am particularly curious about the former question.
Part of your answer is here anon: https://jewishvirtuallibrary.org/the-tenets-of-reform-judaism#Liturgy

Question is for kosher keeping Jews who are chronically ill (can be from any movement)
I am looking for recommendations for electrolyte powders that are kosher. I currently use Liquid IV and generally like it, however it is sadly not kosher and I am trying to find good kosher alternatives for things I use.
This is not medically necessary for my body, but it does seem to help improve my symptoms if that helps with responses.
Assuming OP is in the US based on the "liquid IV" mention.
does anyone have advice for staying connected to Jewish community as a homebound convert? I converted a few years ago now, and at the end of last year I caught COVID, from which I haven't since recovered. I am no longer able to attend my synagogue in person, and none of my friends from synagogue ever visit, for Shabbat or holidays or to say "hi," due to their unfortunately very busy schedules and their families. my non-Jewish family is very supportive of me and has gone out of their way to cook and decorate and help me celebrate Shabbat and other holidays, but it just feels disheartening after a while, not being able to celebrate or connect with other Jews. I'm wondering if anyone else has gone through anything similar, or has any wisdom to share on how to feel a little bit less lonely in this time in my life.
Not a question, but I wanted to thank everyone who gave me advice on not dying on the fast day! I wore light cotton clothes all day, had ice packs on hand to avoid overheating, brought a hand fan, and brought soup to break my fast on (I didn't have a sports drink, but soup has electrolytes). I was also careful about when I was in my hottest costume, so especially thanks for the clothing advice/reminder!
For those who practice, how do you internalize Eretz Yisrael? Is it a simply physical place? A spiritual ideal? Our history, our present, a memory, or something else?
I’ve never actually been there, but turning east to pray, praying for rain over soil I've never touched, and tuning my calendar to the seasons of the Levant… It all makes it impossible not to mourn for it. And when I see how my ancestors have been treated throughout our history, I long for it. I find a sense of home from being with my people, but Eretz Yisrael to me mostly feels like this deep mourning.
I'll allow this but please do not turn this into a discussion on I/p.

I'm trying to make a vegetarian version of cholent but am not sure what to replace the beef with, has anyone here had any luck with any imitation meats or other foods in place of the beef? Most imitation meats appear to be made with the intention of being cooked fast rather than slow-cooked for 18+ hours.
I'm trying to set up a Jewish sci-fi movie night with some friends, does anyone have recommendations of good sci-fi movies with Jewish characters/themes?
Does anyone have tips for checking vegetables with complicated shapes for insects? I love broccoli and could use help with becoming more efficient at the process, and I also usually don’t know when to stop looking (OCD). Even though I live in a pretty Jewish area, I have yet to find pre-checked broccoli. Thanks!
