my first poem to kick off pride poetry month: gods work
I donāt write love poetry, i write about godās work.
I donāt know much about religion, but everytime i see you, god, i am taken to church.
Anecdote: I went to catholic primary school and once when I was 9,
I kissed my best friend on the forehead and thought it was a crime
So without saying why I told my parents, I have to make a pilgrimage and say iām really really sorry to jesus christ our lord.
Now? Iām 17, comfortably bisexual, and because I donāt fly easyjet, Iāve never gone to Lourdes.
Iām not that religious. But the only pilgrimage I would make is to you
and I would unlace my boots, bow, kneel down, and pray in your pew.
I donāt know much about religion, but I know about devotion
Iām not saying youāre my god, but something about emotion
Like this is just too powerful to leave it unspoken.
I donāt know about religion, but I know about music.
But side note: I donāt understand it, singing in public makes me feel sick.
But iād sing hymn after hymn about you and in spite
Of my broken voice, how your eyes fill me with light
And holy watercolour stained glass like i imagine godās might might.
I donāt know much about religion, but i do know what awe is
The bravery of confession and its terrifying catharsis
I find strange ease in spilling my sins to my silent god upon high
And yet when youāre next to me i struggle to breathe āhiā.
Again, iām not saying youāre my god, but god help me, in my mind,
The idea of you answering my prayers seems far more divine
And also scary as hell. Hell, so was writing this poem,
āCause I donāt write love poetry, I write - well, I donāt know.
I donāt know much about religion, music, awe, or devotion,
Christ, I donāt even know how to describe my emotions
I donāt know lots of things, but thereās one thing I do:
I donāt know about love, but i know about you.
