my first poem to kick off pride poetry month: gods work
I don’t write love poetry, i write about god’s work.
I don’t know much about religion, but everytime i see you, god, i am taken to church.
Anecdote: I went to catholic primary school and once when I was 9,
I kissed my best friend on the forehead and thought it was a crime
So without saying why I told my parents, I have to make a pilgrimage and say i’m really really sorry to jesus christ our lord.
Now? I’m 17, comfortably bisexual, and because I don’t fly easyjet, I’ve never gone to Lourdes.
I’m not that religious. But the only pilgrimage I would make is to you
and I would unlace my boots, bow, kneel down, and pray in your pew.
I don’t know much about religion, but I know about devotion
I’m not saying you’re my god, but something about emotion
Like this is just too powerful to leave it unspoken.
I don’t know about religion, but I know about music.
But side note: I don’t understand it, singing in public makes me feel sick.
But i’d sing hymn after hymn about you and in spite
Of my broken voice, how your eyes fill me with light
And holy watercolour stained glass like i imagine god’s might might.
I don’t know much about religion, but i do know what awe is
The bravery of confession and its terrifying catharsis
I find strange ease in spilling my sins to my silent god upon high
And yet when you’re next to me i struggle to breathe “hi”.
Again, i’m not saying you’re my god, but god help me, in my mind,
The idea of you answering my prayers seems far more divine
And also scary as hell. Hell, so was writing this poem,
‘Cause I don’t write love poetry, I write - well, I don’t know.
I don’t know much about religion, music, awe, or devotion,
Christ, I don’t even know how to describe my emotions
I don’t know lots of things, but there’s one thing I do:
I don’t know about love, but i know about you.
(christ, i love me some religious gay poetry. i’m not going to be posting everyday, but hopefully fairly consistently. i need more gay poetry in my life. feel free to tag your lgbtq+ poems with the tag #pridepoetry which i’m tracking and lets make twentygayteen the most poetic ever. @ashocean out x)
