Science side of tumblr here! What you’re seeing is the high amp, high volt current is slowly eating it’s way through the wood, carbonizing it and boiling off the water. So long as this goes on there isn’t much of a circuit created yet, but as soon as that path is finally created you get a MASSIVE current surge as some poor power plant somewhere dumps a decent amount of kilowatts through a path of much less resistance than it’s designed to follow. This flash vaporizes whatever isn’t carbonized in the wood and causes a plasma channel to form, which provides an even BETTER path for the electricity to flow. When you see the huge arc of LIGHTNING near the end, what is happening there is the plasma channel is very very hot, so it rises. As it does so, the arc follows it (it’s still the path of least resistance) and you get a really cool looking ‘rainbow’ of electricity. this cuts out because somewhere, probably the local power substation, a huge breaker just got tripped so that the wires didn’t melt. Cool shit is what it is.
