Visdev Journal: Character Versions of Kazuha&Wanderer
Overview
Looking at the date, I just realized it’s been an entire year since version 1.0 of Kaedehara Kazuha and Wanderer/Scaramouche was created.
I hadn't drawn much for about six months until recently. I thought version 3.0 would turn out horrible since I hadn't picked up my tablet pen in so long. Surprisingly, it turned out fine. I originally just wanted to do some quick recovery sketches, but ended up polishing these pieces a bit more than expected.
Versions
When I was making version 1.0, I was aiming for something more graphic. Both characters were stylized so they didn't look like typical Japanese anime characters. I liked that version, but as my story evolved, it just didn't fit the vibe anymore.
For version 2.0, I went in a completely different direction. Should I make them more natural-looking and add a bit of Japanese flavor? It's not really my strong suit, but I wanted to try. Honestly, version 2.0 fits the story well. Both characters look a bit more mature than in version 1.0. I liked the hair rendering, especially for Kazuha, but it might be too much work for future production.
I wish I could have explored more poses in this style, but a major life event happened, and these were the best I could manage at the time...
I do like version 3.0 right now. I see it as a good blend of 1.0 and 2.0.
The only downside is that my cleanup speed is still pretty slow. However, I'm loving Clip Studio Paint so far. The default pens and brushes are already great for these drawings. Photoshop is a fantastic tool too, and I'm actually more familiar with it, but CSP just has more of the specific functions I'll need moving forward.
Being able to seamlessly switch between my laptop and iPad using the same software feels amazing. It makes the whole workflow so much easier.
Looking Forward
Time to move forward. Maybe some key concepts next? Or specific story moments? Anyway, Kazuha and Wanderer haven't even interacted much in my visual explorations yet—at least not in the ones I've posted.
What will this project look like in the future?
I'm honestly looking forward to seeing it myself.
