ARYA x GENDRY WEEK : Deja Vu
This is super late (as is all of my stuff), but @welt-verbessererin reminded me about finishing it. Expect the last two sometime this week. If you want to read the entire entry, I also posted on Ao3. Itâs longer than I expected it to be.Â
+++++
âDisappointment, thy name is Gendry,â Bella leaned against the counter behind the bar. She picked up another freshly cleaned glass to wipe dry. âCome on,â his sister glanced at the entrance as a group of giggly women stumbled inside. âItâs been a year. Donât think itâs gonna happen."Â
He made a dismissive snort and tossed by the last of his ginger ale, then sat the empty glass in front of her. The edges of his brows twitched with irritation when none of the dark-haired women in the group was the person he sought. Bella was right; itâd been a year to the day since that night. If the brunette did remember him, why would she want to come back?Â
Gendry ran a hand through his loose black hair as it began to itch his forehead. He meant to cut it last weekend, but things ran late at work, and he never got around to it. His sister returned with another drink and a plate of wings. She took some more orders, then returned to her task of cleaning glasses.Â
"Maybe she got hit by a car,â Bella said in the form of a question.Â
âWhat?"Â
"Maybe she got hit by a car,â she shrugged. âYou know, like in one of those classic movies. The ones Edric loves to bore us with watching."Â
"How does that make me feel better?"Â
"Cause youâre not the reason she didnât show up. Maybe she wanted to, and on her way here, she got ran over."Â Â
"Thatâs awful!â He tossed his half-eaten wing back on the plate. âWhy would you-â Gendry pushed his dinner away, no longer hungry at the image. âAnd Iâd still be the reason if she was on her way here when something bad happened to her.â
âOh.â Bellaâs lips rolled inwardly awkwardly, then shrugged again. âThere are plenty of others whoâd kill for your attention. Why donât you go spend a paycheck on one of them,â she pointed the bottom of the glass towards the crowd before setting it down. âGet something out of it while getting her out of your head.â
He mumbled under his breath, then bowed his head to toy with one of the chicken wings. Bella got the message loud and clear. She snatched some food from him and walked away. Not long after, someone took a seat on the stool at the corner of the bar next to him. Gendry didnât care to acknowledge the customer. He had to admit they had a great pair of legs from what he saw in peripheral.Â
Like many readers of A Song of Ice and Fire before me (but not nearly enough), I feel somewhat disturbed by how GRRM deals with childbirth. While I love the books and the complex, nuanced female POV characters the author brings forth, I have do have criticism regarding how women in general are treated in the story, way way to often as mere plot devices. GRRM's use of "death by childbirth" as a gendered way to kill off characters strikes me as particularly problematic, but the way labour and birthing are actually portrayed is also not without issues.
In the realm of Gendrya fanfiction most (but not all, naturally) of what I've read depicting childbirth feels like it's told either from a perspective that is very medicalized and doctor-centric (is that a thing?) or by someone who has learned about it mostly through other forms of fiction. I'm usually bothered with the amount of agency attributed to the woman labouring (too little, imnsho) or with scenarios that speak to an overall lack of knowledge about the physiology of birth.
So I thought I'd try my hand at it. It felt like a really really daunting task, but I really really wanted to see what I could come up with, if I'd be able to write something that felt truthful and gritty, but also delicate and respectful of the experience of giving birth. I chose an outsider point of view for the narrative voice, so we get a Gendry POV.
I am very passionate about this subject, and I loved each minute I spent with the text, written hastly in the middle of the night. Once I started writing, it simply flowed.
This is an excerpt:
"It make no matter what you isn't, son. You is the father. A good one, I dare hope. You let her lean on you now." Arya was panting between his legs, still on her knees. Trembling and pale though she was, she was strong. The strongest person Iâve ever known. Naturally she found her might again. She set a foot on the floor in front of her, so she was kneeling on one leg, and then held on to Gendryâs knees behind her to raise herself to a squatting position. Wylla had to be truly happy with what unfolded in front of her; there was a fond smile on her face, so broad Gendry could see the gap where she had lost a tooth.
âTis perfect, dear. You doing so well! You is fierce. Let us see that babe, mâdear. The babe know the way. You may let come.â Wylla crouched in front of them. âYou doing so well dear. You is. I know the hurt. Itâll pass, promise. I can see the head. You wanna feel the head?â
Gendry couldnât see her face, but he could feel Aryaâs smile. Thatâs why she didnât want the maester around. This last turn of moon, Sims had been rattling on and on about draughts for the pain, and the necessity of lying still all through labour so not to waste the strength sheâd need when came time to push. Bloody idiot.
This fic was inspired by the second prompt of @aryaxgendryweek 2020, "I got your back".
If you're interested and wanna read more, this is the link to it on ao3.

Harvest Season
Winterfell is beautiful this time of year, bustling with activity, and enveloped by the rich scent of barbecue, and harvest, and lavender. It reminds her of fatherâs long, solemn face, of running through the rows with Bran, of her motherâs soft smile.
She shakes away the memories, Winterfell is so full of them, she wonders, for the umpteenth time, if coming home had been a mistake.
Then she spots him.

She totally didnât have a crush on him after he walked out of the locker room shirtless all those years ago, abs glistening after his shower. He was absolutely not guilty of watching all of her competitions online, mesmerized by the way she could glide across the ice on a single blade. Thereâs no reason why having a no strings fling while competing on the biggest stage in sports is a bad idea. Yeah, thereâs definitely no way that can go wrong. AKA Jen wrote a hockey fic for Gendrya Week.

âAye, Gendryâs young like you, better use at the forge. You could be a great help too, what with all those orphans staying with the Heddles.â
Arya bites her lip, considering. Loyalty pulls her in two directions. She feels a cold breeze at her neck, then creaky fingers resting on her shoulder.
âDaughter,â the Lady rasps and Aryaâs heart trembles. It is the first time her mother displays any remembrance of her. The garbled word is enough to spark a fire in her, one bright enough to keep her warm.
âNo,â Arya says to Thoros, looking over her shoulder. The Lady is ugly, unnatural, but Arya is not afraid of her. âIâm staying with my mother.â

AxG week Day 6: Secret Talent
ARYA x GENDRY WEEK : Family Traditions
@aryaxgendryweek
Thank You -Â
According to school gossip, the new student was from Flea Bottom, who gained enrollment through a scholarship. People whispered about the patches on his uniform trousers and his shaggy black hair. Mr. Lannister placed him in the seat next to her when Joffrey complained about the smell. The first thing she noticed was the stitch on his blue blazer because it was a slightly different shade. The old lion had it out for the boy, scrutinizing him for being ill-prepared for his first day. It was a crime; one punishable had the teacher been a peer. No one appeared keen on interfering until she scooted closer and offered they share her textbook.
At the end of class, Arya handed him the book to take home for the night. Reluctant, he stared between her and it. As if it were a trick, he snatched the book and then rushed out. With his head bowed, he charged into the crowded hallway, much like a frightened bull. The other students rushed to move out of his way to make room, wasting more time on gossip.
They ranâwell, she ranâinto one another in the same hallway the next morning. The group of girls behind her scattered the moment his nostrils flared. When they were alone, he shoved the book at her, nodded, then stormed off in the opposite direction. The brunette thought him peculiar until a piece of paper stole her attention. Curious, Arya pulled the torn newspaper clipping and unfolded it to find broad, bold strokes written over the parchment.
Thank You
âArya,â she announced before class the same day. The new boy glanced around in question, which made her giggle. âYes, you. I figured if weâre going to be study partners this semester, we should at least get introductions out of the way, donât you think?â She held out a hand. âIâm Arya, and you areâŚ?â
He swallowed with some difficulty, staring at her hand as if it was some foreign alien object. When he did lift his gaze to her face, a pair of the bluest eyes sheâd ever seen. That was saying something given the Tully genes among her siblings. âGendry,â the boy whispered and cautiously shook her hand.
âWelcome to Kingâs Landing Prep, Gendry.â
Arya placed the textbook at the edge of his desk to share again today. Â She only let go of his hand once she slid in the seat next to him, deciding not to push her luck too soon.
Check Yes or No -Â
Every day of school for the last two years, Arya and Gendry made it a habit to pass notes between classes. It was an easy and simple way to brighten the otherâs mood or keep up-to-date with what happened throughout the day. Sophmore prom was around the corner, and she knew exactly how she wanted to ask her best friend. If they waited for Gendry to make a move, theyâd be stuck in the friendzone until one of them died. Besides, modern problems required modern solutions, and she wasnât afraid to flip the tables on proper social etiquette.
Since they didnât share a lunch period this semester, she bribed one of the lunch ladies to slip the invitation on his tray with his favorite sandwiches. He would have a few hours to process the request and have a response by Chemistry. Though, a public romantic gesture by their lockers before then wouldnât be a bad idea, either. But, of course, Gendry was not one for anything that would draw attention.
A bundle of nerves followed Arya throughout the day until he quietly sat beside her at the lab table. Not a single word was spoken, no note, no sign. She wasnât the type to doubt her actions, but he didnât even acknowledge her! That had to be a bad sign, right? When the bell dismissed them, her shoulders sagged in disappointment. Gendry slid his textbook in front of her, half of the invitation stuck out. Excitedly, Arya ripped the invitation open. Neither option had a mark as expected; yet, he had added choices of his own at the bottom.
Prom? Check Yes or No
Friends or Couple?
She glanced up at him to see that he was every bit as nervous. Arya pulled out a red pen and circled the second choice with a dramatic twirl. The tips of Gendryâs ears burned red, and he tried to contain the smile from reading her response. He leaned forward, taking the red pen, and added a checkmark on top of the first choice above. After, he gave her a chaste kiss on the cheek and tried to run off.
âExcuse you,â she caught the tail of his blazer and tugged him back. Her new boyfriend swung around, confused by the offense. Arya grinned, stood on tiptoes, and pecked him on the cheek. Heat spread from his ears down to his cheeks. âWalk your girlfriend to the next class?â
Gendryâs smile broke from its usual tight-lip style, the corner of his eyes and mouth crinkling. He was a handsome brood, but she decided this was her favorite expression. Their fingers entwined, and together they became the schoolâs latest and hottest gossip.
Marry Me -Â
âAh, this is where you ran off,â a pair of strong arms wrapped around her middle. The sudden heat kept the chilly air at bay while they stood on the empty balcony. âIsnât there a rule against the guest of honor disappearing during their party?â
The music and laughter from the large crowd continued despite Aryaâs presence. Now that the speeches were over and the cake cut, no one cared. Let them drink, dance, and be merry. She mustered enough energy to caress his exposed forearms where heâd rolled the sleeves to his black dress shirt. âOur party,â she corrected and leaned into his chest with a heavy sigh. âExhausted, to be honest. Should have known mother had something planned. Had I known, Iâd have skipped town after the graduation ceremony.â
âWeâd have skipped town,â Gendry squeezed gently. âNo way in all seven hells I would survive this much attention without you.â
She smirked. âYouâve gotten better. Everyone enjoyed your speech today. It looked like your mother cried.â
âThatâs cause she got the universityâs latest bill,â he chuckled until she elbowed him. Gendry kissed her shoulder. âNah, mumâs happy for me.â
It was no secret that many people doubted the boy from Flea Bottom for the past decade. Determination and wits helped him prove them wrong. Arya turned in his hold and wrapped her arms around his neck. She raised on her tiptoes. âI am, too, you know. Proud of you.â
He held her close, lifting her just barely off the ground to make the innocent kisses more comfortable. Something might have started between them if she hadnât groaned. Scared that he hurt her, Gendry pulled away.
âI was thinking of all those gifts weâll have to try and fit into our apartment,â Arya almost whined.
Gendry relaxed and pressed his lips to her forehead. âYou havenât even opened mine yet.â
She lightly slapped at his chest. âWe said no presents!â
âWell, I already had this one. Tough luck.â
From behind his back, he revealed a rectangular box wrapped in an old newspaper. âWhere did you have that hiding.â she ignored it for a moment to lean in and investigate how he couldâve hidden anything for that long. He rolled his eyes and swatted her away.
âJust open the damn thing.â
Arya eyed him suspiciously, then eagerly ripping the paper. âI remember the first note you gave me in high school,â she giggled and handed him the loose paper. âMr. Lannisterâs textbook? What-â Something stuck out from the pages of the book.
When she went to open it rather carelessly, an item dropped out from the middle. Gendry bent to capture it before it touched the ground. Aryaâs attention went back to the folded piece of paper and opened it to reveal one last question.
Marry Me?
Tears prickled her eyes as she gazed beyond the book to see Gendry still on his knee. The item in his hand a ring for her.âI meant to propose two years ago, but then you suggested we go for our Masterâs Degree. We promised no big decisions untilâŚand then weâŚâ He started to trip over his words again as he used to when they were teenagers. âI love you,â this time with more conviction. âIâve loved you for as long as I can remember. There isnât a whole lot Iâm certain about in life, except for you. Marry M-â
Book forgotten, Arya lept into him until the momentum pushed them to the ground. She began to pepper Gendry with kisses, punctuated by a tearful âyesâ for each one.
Grandma -Â
This year for the holidays, the couple knew exactly how to break the news to their families. Each mother received a blank scrapbook with materials to fill the pages as time passed. As mothers were when older, both smiled gratefully at the gifts and started to set them aside. However, Gendry cleared his throat.
âWe have the first page complete,â Arya told them and gestured to the yellow and grey books.
Cat and Maria glanced at one another, curious to see if the other had any clue. They opened the cover and stared down. The room fell silent as those around them tried to sneak a peek at it. Cat gasped and reached for Mariaâs hand, then the screaming began.
The couple separated long enough to be congratulated by their family members. Rickon, who had not caught on to the excitement, picked up his motherâs scrapbook.
Grandma
Below the colorful title was the ultrasound picture. His mouth formed an âOâ shape.
Good Morning, Mommy. Good Night, Daddy -Â
Elyana wrote her parents a note every day since she was old enough to hold a crayon. The tradition started because of her dad, who wrote to her mom while she slept. They had opposite work schedules in the early years, using what methods they could to make the distance more manageable. Dad would wake up with Elyana in the morning and got them ready for the day. Their notes were placed in momâs lunchbox in the fridge. At night, before mom went to work, and dad came home, the girls would return the gesture.
Good Morning, Mommy. Good Night, Daddy.
Even when their schedules changed again, and they were allowed to be a family more than the weekends or holidays, her letters addressed them the same. It was tradition, after all. Something familiar and safe to start and end the day. But what she was most fond of was lunchtime at school, when she would open her bag and spot letters of her own. Words of encouragement, affirmations, and promises Elyana knew theyâd keep.
âDid you hear about the new student?â Â Her friend, Joy, leaned in and pointed across the cafeteria. âHeard theyâre here on scholarship.â
