Because Americaβs default setting is racism. That doesnβt mean they cannot unlearn it, but anti-Blackness is so ubiquitous in Western culture that unlearning racism is not something that just magically happens because you think youβre a good person. Itβs not something you attain and then forget about. Itβs a perishable skill.
Nobody becomes βnot racistβ by repeatedly declaring βBut hey, IβM not racistβ on social media. Becoming βnot racistβ is defined by conscious choice, coupled with actionsβlike listening to black people, calling out racism, and not saying or doing racist thingsβthat prove you arenβt racist. Being βnot racistβ is something that needs to be worked on CONSTANTLY.
