There's something so painful in that line to me.

Because, Derek is essentially saying "How can you die for someone you don't even know? How can you die for a stranger?"

And while it may seem like Derek is being a bit of a hypocrite---considering he only met Avery a few hours ago, he really isn't.

Because Avery isn't a stranger to him.

He knows Avery. Infinite knowledge let him showed him who Avery was. He knew Avery's name. He probably knew Avery's favorite color and his favorite food. He could literally identify a fake (seemingly identical) Avery.

Derek knew everything about Avery.

Avery wasn't a stranger to Derek.

So…I has a day to myself to do laundry and maybe got distracted :]

First pov I watched was Scott and realized I needed to watch everyone’s- I’ve watched Avid’s I’m watching Owen’s then Shelby and Cleo and Apo and Pearl, Drift and Ren, and Sasauge and Legundo,Martyn everyone basically I need every single crevice of this story

For the first few episodes Scott sees Shelby as a sort of entertaining pet (yes this is important) she sees him as their best friend and Scott sees them as a pet. That’s really actually kinda sad, Shelby’s turning was a betrayal in of itself. She trusted everyone they went out with, we talk about Avid’s death, and Pyro’s turning with that, but everyone forgets that Shelby was betrayed by people she trusted to. And yes they grew to love it but that’s where people leave it.

It wasn’t until after Scott had betrayed Shelby that he actually started to care about them. She was someone who actually cared about him, not infatuated like Pyro (which Scott knew damn well was a fawn response), and not apprehensive like Owen. Shelby was the one member of the coven that actually liked Scott and in spite of that betrayal as well. They liked and trusted Scott even though Scott treated her like a pet and food.

He’s actually HURT when Shelby lied to him about Avid’s turning. It was still buried under the apathy but it was there. He didn’t like it when Pyro lied to him, but Shelby? The one fledgling who actually liked and cared about Scott? The one fledgling who thought of him as a friend rather than just a sire? Yeah, he was hurt, and no one talks about that enough. Shelby was probably the only person Scott cared if he hurt, she was the only person who had confirmed to Scott that they cared (NEGLECTED SCOTT GOLDSMITH MY BELOV—)

So yes, Shelby brought out the resting human emotion that allowed for Scott to even consider giving Avid a chance. And that’s why the fact that Shelby was the one who turned Avid was so important. Had anyone else turned Avid, Scott wouldn’t have given two shits about him, but it was Shelby who turned him, Shelby who begged Scott not to hurt him when she revealed they were the one who’d turned him. And that’s why Scott listened, that’s why Avid was given a chance, Because. Of. Shelby.

And because Scott gave Avid a chance that’s what shocked him completely out of his apathy, and it was because of Shelby.
