This took me much longer than usual (5+ hours) because I had to lineart three fullbody characters, but I’m really happy with how it turned out. I messed around with the expressions so much but the lighting and outfits really worked!

Finally, my first creature to show!! It’s of course my sapient race, the Gardenling.

Relatively short in stature, their clever nature was needed to survive on the forest floor and in the undergrowths of the Garden. While a large portion of their diet is plant based, they are known to scrounge for small game such as bugs, birds, and fish. Despite being mainly terrestrial, they aren’t as well adapted to marathon running as humans, moving more slowly over long distances. They make up for this by being skillful in climbing trees and rock faces alike. Gardenlings are social creatures, forming large families and villages, and are generally much less aggressive with one another than humans are.

Here’s some notes on their anatomy worth mentioning now.

- They have a one way respiratory system, breathing in like earth mammals and breathing out through gill-like holes in their sides

- Their “teeth” are fused and much more beak shaped in the front, only breaking up into more familiar molars further back in the mouth.

- The antennae atop their head are more akin to eyebrows than insect antenna, helping to express emotion. In fact, they were likely derived from the “hair” that covers the tops of a Gardenling’s head and the end of its tail.

- As well as having two fingers and two thumbs on each hand, the Gardenling has an additional digit on each foot, and three digits on the end of its tail.

Smith!! She's a loyal friend and known to be nurturing and cheesy, but that doesn't stop her from cursing every other word.
