This was kinda depressing...
If I'm being honest, I found this poem rather depressing. My notion was that this guy came upon the deer while driving, and she was already dead. He stops, so that he can push her into the ravine and finds that she's pregnant. But without even attempting to save the fawn, he pushes the doe into the ravine, effectively killing both her and her fawn.
I don't really understand why he didn't try to save the fawn. It's what I would do. He just seems to decide that its a lost cause, and gives up - pushing the doe away from him and into the abyss. That kind of makes me sad, because its an example of the decay of humanity. Some people try to preserve life - all kinds of life - no matter what. And then there are those, like this guy, who just sacrifice it, so that he can finish his ride home and get some dinner and a beer.
Deer matter, I think. This poem, even with its perfect images (they just formed pristinely in my mind), depresses me because it shows that other people do not think so much of our furry friends.
