Do you remember that family trip we took? Somewhere in California, when I left the map at the rest stop bathroom? Oh yeah, how could I forget? Dad was furious. And he refused to pull over and ask for directions. And after him and mom arguing for hours, and us complaining, he finally said, ‘Screw it!’, and he just pulled over. And we played in the water for hours until the sun went down. I don’t even remember where we were going, but I just.. I’ve never forgotten that beach. My hardest days, I would lose myself in that memory. Pretend that the desert sand was the beach. That the screams and yelling were laughter and seagulls. And I could fake everything but the water. And I promised myself, if I ever get out, I am going to live by the ocean in California and I am going to feel that water every day.
