The Girl In the Shadows (Rainbow High Story)
This is a story I started in July of last year, and didn't continue it until months later. I recently just finished it.
I hope this isn't too out of character either.
This is a pretty long fic.
Violet and Sunny go way back, like way way back. It's like she's known the girl since forever. They could always be seen hanging out, whether in school or outside of school.
They clicked like no other. Laughter bustling from them, as they ran and chased after each other during an afternoon game of tag.
In these moments, there was sometimes an unexpected third to these playdates.
“Hi Luna” A 5-year-old Sunny waved happily in her high pitched voice.
“Hi…” Luna would wave towards Sunny, then at Violet.
Violet waved back. She realized she didn’t exactly hangout with Luna before, nor did she know much about the other girl. All she knew was that she was Sunny’s twin. That’s all she could chalk it up to.
“Do you want to play tag with us?” She asked as her eyes twinkled.
“Yay!” She expressed with glee. Now with 3 players, it’ll be a lot more fun.
And this was just the start to Violet and Luna’s bonding experience.
One thing Violet wouldn’t have expected was how fascinated she was with Luna.
There was something about this girl. Maybe how she always stuck to her own ways. How she stayed in her own little world. How she seemed to not care about what people thought.
But, Violet only got a shot of her from afar.
Anytime she came to Sunny’s house, she never spoke to the other girl. Sure, they hung out a bit in childhood, but it was always and only through Sunny. She didn’t exactly care to interact with her sister outside of that.
“Soooo…. How about truth or dare?” Sunny said, picking at the carpeted rug they sat on.
“No… we’ve done that many times already-“
Footsteps could be heard from afar entering the livingroom.
“Hey… do you have a charger cord by chance, like an extra?”
“Uh, possibly. What for?”
Oh yeah… She films. Something Violet wants to get better at herself. She’s gotten some glimpses of Luna’s short films she’s been working on. The cinematography looks absolutely immaculate. It’s better than what she attempted with her vlogs. Weeks of YouTube tutorials didn’t exactly help either. She couldn’t really figure out all the complicated software’s out.
“I don’t think I’ll have one for a camera?.. What type do you need?”
“Oh- Nevermind, I remembered I have one..”
“Ok…” And with that, Luna left.
“Sooo, what do you have in mind?” Sunny turned her head over to Violet.
“Nothing… my mind’s blank.”
Nearing the beginning of 8th grade, Sunny and Violet were already planning their applications for Rainbow High. Their mothers had discussed so much of the school and their days there. Fond memories and amazing experiences. Though, never mentioned the heavily loaded work that comes with your specific focus.
Sunny was ecstatic, hoping she’d get in just like the rest of her family had. Violet was anxious to say the least, but, she’d do anything just to get into the same school as her best friend… even if it meant ditching her afterwards in the process.
Look, she wanted to meet new people, but, she couldn’t figure out how to tell Sunny that. She didn’t want to upset the girl. Sunny was always full of rays and sunshine, her being sad meant something bad had happened. You rarely see her sad.
“Is Luna applying as well?” Violet asked with a bit of a smile.
Sunny groaned, looking a bit agitated at the question.
“No, she’s planning to attend Shadow High.”
“wait what-“ Violet didn’t fully process what was said until after answering.
“I said, she’s planning to attend Shadow High.” Sunny seemed more upset than before.
Thinking about it, she hasn’t really seen Luna as often. Only at school, but, not necessarily outside of that. Sure, this isn’t too surprising, but, usually the sisters are still interacting. They haven’t been as close as before.
“Just stuff with Luna, she’s pissing me off. Sorry, I didn’t mean to get mad at you” Sunny lips curved into a smile, bringing back the happiness in her.
Violet nodded. Though, she couldn’t shake off the irritation Sunny just expelled. She’s never seen her this upset.
With this, she’d never admit it, but she’s definitely developed a crush on Luna.
Something about her purple eyes, her once curly blonde hair (now in space buns due to Sunny’s insistence on wearing sailor moon’s hairstyle), and her charming smile (when she does smile atleast, most of the time she has a blank/serious expression. Can come off as intimidating sometimes.
Violet realized all these years, her growing fascination also developed into feelings. She wished Luna felt the same way, or even dared to talk with her only…
Actually, that did happen once. She did talk to Luna and only her before.
Violet skipped down the sidewalk, passing different colored houses, leading her way to Sunny’s house. Excited to hangout with her after accomplishing her homework.
She went up the concrete stairs of the blue house, ringing on the doorbell.
A short while before the door was unlocked and opened. She found herself looking at Luna.
“Hi.. uh, Sunny told me to come over…”
“oooh, she’s not home currently. Had to go do something last minute with our mom”
“oh- she just texted me now” Violet looked at the text message that popped up in her notifications.
“it’s fine, it’s not your fault…” Violet slipped her phone in her pocket.
“So, you going now?” Luna asked as her brow furrowed.
“Uhm… do you want to hangout?” Violet asked awkwardly.
Luna fiddled with her fingers, thinking for a moment. “Yeah, I guess. I’m not doing anything..”
“Yay” Violet walked into the house as Luna shut the door.
Heading upstairs, the two went straight to Luna’s room, which Violet has only seen in passing anytime she walked over to Sunny’s room which was next door. However, Luna always kept the door closed, so she didn’t always see what it looked like.
Carpeted flooring, twin size bed, a black desk with all her technology, some shelving, LED lights, her TV, a tall lamp in one of the corners of the room, some extra decor like posters of albums, TV shows/movies, some pictures, and some her instruments (in their cases).
“Sit…” Luna patted the spot on her bed.
Violet sat down, confused on what to talk about. She got herself into this situation, but she didn’t know how to continue it.
“So, are you currently doing anything film related? Like a new movie or something…”
“Oh, yeah. Though, I’ve only drawn the storyboards for it… it’s not done essentially is what I’m saying, so, I wouldn’t really show you it now.” Luna went on in explanation.
“Oh ok… that’s fine” Violet swung her legs nervously.
This is getting awkward She thought to herself.
“you want to play a game… or something. Like a video game?”
“it’s getting painfully awkward, it’s my only way to break the silence.” Luna’s fingers circled around each other as she stared at Violet.
Violet was in thought, she wasn’t much into video games, but, she couldn’t pass up on doing something with Luna.
Luna’s eyes were lowered, making a more hooded appearance.
All Violet could do was stare at those purple eyes.
She always looks slightly intimidating….. and I like it? Violet’s thoughts ran on.
“Cool” Luna brought over her laptop, opening one of the applications, entering to a library of games. “Alright, you pick one.”
Violet stared down the assortment of games. The screen shown brightly at her face. She chose one at random. Before she knew it, 2 hours would’ve gone by playing different games. The two laughed their asses off. Until a knock came at the door….
“Hey you two!” It was Sunny.
“Hi sunny” Violet responded.
“You didn’t get my text, Vi?”
“No I did, I just decided to hangout with Luna”
“Mhmm. Whatcha’ two playing?” She tiptoed over.
“We’ve been playing a different assortment of games, can’t tell” Luna replied.
Afterwards, the room filled with giggles again from the three girls. Everything felt alright, like a crack had been sealed.
That was the last time they all hungout together, happily at least. Any other moments felt dry and not so cathartic.
Violet and Sunny got into Rainbow High, and Luna got into Shadow High.
There was a sister split and a friendship split (or whatever type of relationship Violet had with Luna to begin with).
It was a beginning into their respective schools, and an ending to their friendship… for now.
But Violet continued to have lingering feelings, feelings that never left her mouth
Happy 2026! I have another fic in the drafts that I still haven't finished since last year. I want to post it, but I don't know how long it'll take. Will see, though.
