Ardyn eased down into the welcoming hot bath. As the water embraced his sore form, the stress of all the years alleviated in each passing second. He reveled in the magical properties of this onsen’s natural spring and nearly blessed the Infernian for just the right temperature.
He laid his head against the curvature of a well-placed stone and took in he cherry blossoms above. They swayed elegantly with the warm wind, and Ardyn admired how every so often a petal would catch hold of the air and tumble onto the pool’s rippling surface.
Here, Ardyn didn’t have to worry about the throne, the Starscourge, or any troublesome relatives interrupting his relaxation. The thoughts of such things were truthfully far from his mind.
A woman’s voice called from behind the wooded screen. “Is everything to your liking, your Majesty?”
“Quite,” he hummed. “You’ve no idea how many years of energy have been restored to these weary bones.”
Ardyn set his charming cup down with a click and took in the fresh mix of brews in the small shop. He could understand why the business flourished with enthusiastic tourists, and he was no exception of those bewitched by the local charm.
One of the waiters came to his table. “Excuse me, sir.” He waited for the acknowledgment before continuing. “We’re having more business than normal today. Management has asked if there would be any customers willing to share a table.”
Glancing past the host, Ardyn spotted a woman he was seemingly referring to.
“Of course. It would be an honor if the young lady were to accompany me.” The lad bowed, grateful that he had a compliant patron. Just as the boy was walking away, Ardyn called out, “And another cup, please.”
As Ardyn took another sip of his heavenly coffee, the lady of the hour took the seat across from him. She offered an embarrassed smile, probably thinking she had interrupted his peaceful time alone. Ardyn, however, returned her smile with one of his own enchanting ones. She did far than take away from his extended vacation.
“Welcome,” he all but purred, “to my own corner of paradise.”
“There was once a time when this land was plagued with darkness. Not per say in the aspect of night and day, but more of…a disease. We call it the Starscourge. And in these past times, the people from all over Eos sought salvation.
“As our realm continued to fall into blackness, the Astrals deemed a savior would rise to heal and to save.
“And true to the words foretold, a man was indeed born into this world. Born and bred to be a deliverer. A healer. He traveled to the cities and small towns of every country, doing everything to cure and alleviate their suffering. Everything he did was for the people.”
Ardyn’s stroll with the young lady seemed to have taken a memorable turn. Not that he minded remembering the happier times. He enjoyed telling others and seeing them mesmerized of his past life.
The girl on his arm beamed and tightened her hold. “The man sounds like a dream. And you tell this story almost as if you know it by heart.”
He chuckled. “Better than you know, my dear.”
The harsh reality that sprung from her tearful interrogation would only drive her away. Ardyn had wished to avoid it. The amount of joy in the time he’d shared with the woman would come to an end, and all because of what he was.
He could always lie, of course. But even in time, guilt would surely overpower the desire for her to remain in the dark. Ardyn would not do that to her.
And so, he openly bared the horrid state of the blackened eyes and dripping daemon ichor before her. She would despise him. Hate and reject his cruel fate he bore.
“Yes… I have become the Cain to traverse this earthen soil for eternity. I’m no longer considered human. Immortal and a body akin to that of a daemon’s. I am the monster children are frightened of. The nightmare in your dreams.
Over the centuries, Ardyn had learned to take pleasure in the smaller things of life. Taking moments to enjoy the sights of Eos. Tossing gil into a well that was absurdly rumored to grant wishes. Striking up conversation with a stranger. There were endless accounts, and those were how he kept smiling.
When a grand event happened, that was a different story, but certainly those were few and far between. However, the beauty held close to his chest was one of those grand events.
Ardyn marveled at how she became accepting and even loving towards him. And he pondered over the mystery while twirling her soft tresses.
She looked up. “Happy Birthday, Ardyn,” she whispered.
He laughed. Low and deeply amused. “Darling, I don’t believe it’s my birthday. I can hardly remember such a date. The occasion means nothing to my anymore.”
She rose and kissed him on his stubbled chin. “But you mean something to me. And that’s all the reason I need to celebrate.”
Ardyn had long turned his back on the gods. Ever since the day he was rejected by the crystal, the hatred and pain he felt were partially blamed on them. The entire tragedy tore through his mind in agonizing anger.
Now, he felt somewhat ashamed to ask of them a selfish request.
Ardyn knew the Astrals would soon he rather fall into oblivion as to hear his plea. And still, he knew of no other way. Should the divine beings deny his request, he would bear through the years once more.
Alone, he lifted his amber eyes to the starry heavens, the autumn breeze causing his auburn locks to sway.
“Astrals,” he called, “Gods of the mountains, seas… Flame, ice, and air. Lend an ear, I beg.
“I willingly bore this curse with good intentions. My deeds permanent, as is my state of being. However, I implore you gods of old for forgiveness. Grant me this mortal state, that I may learn and live in the light.”
“Ardyn, is something wrong?”
The furrowed brow, how she immediately dropped her current project upon him bursting into the building without warning. Her concern filled him with an emotion beyond happiness.
Within seconds, he was at her feet, arms encircling her as his face pressed against her stomach. This was what he needed right now. Her presence, her light.
Without spoken words, her worry manifested to comb though his auburn wisps. Ardyn’s arms never left her, only tightened to confirm this reality.
He spoke in a hushed whisper. “Far from it, my love.”
He turned his brightened gaze up to hers. “I am simply a man before you.” He rose, taking her hands and kissing each.
Their chance meeting had only continued to grow and flourish into a new life. “I wish to ask for your heart, as well as your hand. To cherish now and forever… Until the end of my days.”
