Like idk in my head they make PERFECT sense and don’t get me wrong it’s not sonething i would have considered before Rebecca’s art but I think it would have been great for their character arcs. I prefer them as friends in canon but fandom stuff is a whole other can of worms 🤧

This isn’t a ship I ever thought I’d be particularly interested in or like but as it turns out I’m a sucker for complicated dynamics and this ship in particular is SO good at that!

I didn’t even consider it until Rebecca’s sketches started resurfacing last year (?) and most of what I saw about it at least on tiktok was a CRAZY amount of backlash but it’s these particular sketches that really won me over. Steven universe is all about different relationships and healing and all that stuff and a BIG part of both Pearl and Greg’s characters are their history with rose and a lot of pearls character arc specifically centres around her having to move on and learn to live without her. I think Greg and Pearl making up and developing a friendship was so good for the series and I wish their dynamic had been explored more in canon (I’m talking platonic here). The empire city episode really solidifies this and I think it’s nice seeing them get along.

Greg and Pearl involved ROMANTICALLY is a wholeee other story but not one I’m particularly against at all, rivals x lovers is high up on there with my favourite tropes (idk what to tell you I love tension) and I think it’s a nice complex dynamic once you really sink your teeth into all the meaty fleshy bits of it and look at their characters and what this relationship would do for them development wise

“This is about YOU” ughhh I just love how much of a sweetheart Greg is in these sketches it’s nice to be able to see Pearls inner turmoil and how obviously conflicted she is about this, wanting it but also having it go against everything she’s thought for so long is SO good! And you know, what better way to get over your ex lesbian celestial goddess situationship by boning her baby daddy?? It’s brilliant!! Probably not something I’d want to see in canon I think half of its charm comes from it not happening within the show but it’s stuff a really fun dynamic to explore, it’s also so sweet how Greg immediately recognises Pearls apprehensiveness and jumps to reassure her 🥹 I don’t have anything specific to say about that it’s just cute LOL

There’s also steven who they both practically raised (Pearl maybe a bit more than Greg 👀) so its not like the ONLY thing they have in common is rose (music, love for the earth..?? I guess??.. Greg being one of the only humans to kind of sort of understand gem stuff??) and on that note I also wonder how a relationship like this would impact Steven. I’m sure it depends on what point in the series and I honestly don’t see this happening until maybeeee future or at least during the timeskip between the og series and future, empire city was a damn good turning point for their relationship but I reckon for something like this they’d need to maintain friendship for a whileee.. slowburn you know

Okay I just said wholeee lot of nothing but yeah tldr I like this ship it’s fun to think about and rebeccas art (below) really solidified it for me
