always  have  a  plan  b:  granted,  in  this  case,  it’s  merely  moving  from  deflection  to  distraction  because  the  former  hadn’t  seemed  to  do  the  job  (  wishful  thinking  didn’t  stop  anyone  from  knowing  him  well  enough  to  see  it  ).  “  cut  me  some  slack,  rhod-eo.  ”  tone  airing  the  same  cocky  energy  it  always  did,  except  this  time  there’s  keys  that  indicate  how  exhausted  he  is  —  how  much  all  of  this  is  more  forced  than  it’s  ever  been.  “  not  that  i’m  religious  or  anything  —  definitely  only  go  to  churches  for  the  wine  —  but  i’m  pretty  sure,  that  sunday’s  are  rest  days  AND  TODAY  IS  DEFINITELY  NOT  THAT.  ”  holding  up  a  metal  arm,  that  he’s  presently  operating  to  do  a  thumbs  up.  “  so  s  club  8  really  are  a  chip  off  the  old  block,  i’m  ALMOST  proud...  ”  he  gives  an  exaggerated  hum,  sure  it’s  flattering.  that  maybe  the  avengers  and  every  other  hero  had  inspired  something  in  these  young  minds  and  made  them  want  to  fight  but  he  felt  like  his  part  of  it  was  a  lie;  he’d  always  just  be  a  coward  that  got  lucky.  “  if  it’ll  get  you  off  my  back,  cool  uncle  tony  can  make  a  guest  appearance  on  friday...speaking  of  —  hey  friday,  put  that  in  my  calendar.  ”

“ getting  caught  with  my  hand  in  the  cookie  jar,  just  isn’t  as  fun  when  fury  isn’t  around  to  slap  it.  ”  while  the  rest  was  meaningful  sarcasm,  he  did  miss  having  fury  around  to  berate  him  for  his  —  less  appealing  —  ventures  (  almost  as  much  as  he  did  happy  ).   “  take  it  from  me,  kiddo...  ”  offering  a  quick  pat  to  the  shoulder,  as  if  that  was  gonna  pass  on  some  wisdom  or  common  sense.  “  totally  not  worth  it  —  great  for  the  short  term  but  in  the  long  term  it  all  comes  back  to  smack  you  in  the  face,  you  know  ?  one  big  reality  brick.  ”

“ nice  reflexes,  kid.  ”  he  chuckles,  perhaps  finding  some  form  of  irony  in  how  he’d  never  have  lived  down  breaking  his  back  —  if  not  also  a  little  karma  based  for  the  HUNDREDS  of  jokes  he’d  made  about  his  formally  frozen  teammate.   “  you  see  anyone  frozen  in  there,  stay  the  hell  away...  ”  clearly  joking  but  having  far  too  much  fun  to  give  up  just  yet.  “  total  pains  in  the  ass  —  you  make  one  wizard  of  oz  reference  and  they  look  at  you  like  they’ve  taken  on  the  role  of  the  scarecrow.  ”

“  the  word  you’re  looking  for  —  buddy  —  is  science.  ”  he  doesn’t  mean  to  come  off  so  brash;  if  anything  it’s  more  a  side  effect  of  not  letting  himself  think  about  what  he’s  saying  before  he  says  it   (  because  who  had  time  for  that  shit,  right  ?  ).  “  given  I  don’t  exactly  have  the  time  to  give  you  the  full  rundown  on  thermodynamics  and  how  it  comes  into  play  with  engineering,  ”  dropping  a  shoulder  into  a  quick  nonchalant  shrug.  “  i’m  gonna  have  to  say  pass  on  this  whole  dead  franchise  lecture  but  nice  try —  hey...you  think  they  ever  stole  some  of  their  stories  from  the  avengers  ?  ”  looking  at  the  other  man  as  if  he’s  even  a  little  bit  serious  about  the  answer.  you  can’t  teach  an  old  dog  new  tricks  and  tony  still  enjoyed  pulling  people’s  strings.
