A couple weeks ago when I was doing my designs for all the Deltora Quest characters I was thinking to myself very solidly that Dain would be like a fluffy-haired anime DSMP type softboy (derogatory). Like I was very set on this because I thought it would be funny if he looked like a generic protagonist. But then I got really high and forgot all that and drew some kind of boneless versace peasant.

and so life went on in deltora, and life was good.
i do think there is something seductive about dain (there's probably a better word for it, but i can't think of one rn). what i mean is that he draws you in. he's described so much in a book where few people are ever given physical descriptions. we have no idea what lief might look like but we know dain's face, his mannerisms, the texture of his hair, the emotions plain on his face. you're drawn into it. even though as a reader you know something is up. lief and the narration often say that it seems like there's more to dain than meets the eye.
and it's been like 20 years but i can't get over how perfect dain's introduction is. introducing him at the same time as ols and letting him be the one to tell us about them was an absurdly genius move. bc why would we be suspicious of him. we may think there's something strange about him but we don't think he could be an ol, because we already know him. well, we don't really know him, but he's not a new character. we met him pre-ols, two whole books ago, and we may not really trust doom but doom seems to trust him to an extent, and doom rarely trusts, so we’re okay with doom’s boy.
and dain's information is legit, the existence of the twin ols confirm everything he says. so why wouldn't we trust him when we learn ols can't eat or drink and don't get injured? the first things dain does when we meet him are drink tea and dislocate his arm. it's all so genius, the existence of a manufactured heir to perfectly fit the role someone might expect the heir to take, to mislead and ensnare, never to reveal himself or break cover, to subtly sow discord and make lief simultaneously jealous and charmed, to be a burden never heavy enough to make someone drop him but just enough to encumber and slow down progress, to (somehow, incredibly) get close to someone as paranoid as doom, to take advantage of the teenager-shaped hole in doom's life that doom himself doesn't even know exists. it's DELICIOUS.
and in his introduction he straight-up tells us what he's doing!!!!! when he saves the trio from those ols he says that the ols had been stalking them for days and decided the best way to ensnare them was to prey on their compassion. to masquerade as children in danger. WHICH IS EXACTLY WHAT HE IS DOING. they fell for it twice!! all because everyone fell for this pretty, fine-boned, honorable-looking young man who was literally manufactured in a laboratory to entice.

It's also very funny how all three of the main party in Deltora Quest are total cunts. You look at Barda like "he's the nice one cause he's like their defacto guardian" and then realize he's a catty, distrustful, dramatic mf. Then you think "oh then Lief must be the nice one. He's the hero after all" and then the narration is like "Lief wanted to kill this guy so bad but he knew he couldn't so he just seethed and malded for twelve minutes." And then Jasmine is just a complete asshole all the time. There are like two genuinely lawful-good side characters (Prin and Manus) and one of them is an actual child. Doom is a bastard. Glock is a bastard. Neridah is a bastard. Tom is a bastard. Ava is a bastard. Hell, even Steven Oftheplains is presented as really nice and you're like "finally. A normal person." Nope, he is also concerningly ok with killing people. There are no normal people on that entire dystopian continent. And it rules.
i think the funniest thing deltora quest ever pulled off was in shadowlands (? i think?) where the main characters are running around in a series of caves and they stumble onto a massive presumed to be extinct gold dragon that's just like. snoozing. and these protags fight every generic fantasy trope in existence, look at each other like 😶, quietly back out of the cavern and never talk about it for the rest of the book. just refuse to engage. like i know they address the dragon stuff in the next series but it's still funny that it happened.......the second funniest thing was the evil live laugh love wall hanging
dain picking up an attitude after spending a couple weeks with the other kids lmaoooo do you think he picked this up naturally, or was consciously copying their behaviors, or maybe he just really really wanted to mouth off to doom at least once.
also doom outright saying ‘i am never wrong. but i guess it’s possible.’ is crazyyyyy no wonder jasmine hates him
