How would Norton react to being possessed by a ghost? Or having to share brain space with one? (Kind of like the voices in Slay the Princess)
What if it’s a friendly ghost? What if it’s an evil ghost? The possibilities are endless!
Oke so hear me out.. We all know of Norton's second identity (Fool's Gold) and how he shares brain space with it.. what if it wasn't just an identity switch but some kind of ghost that attached himself to Norton early on as he worked in the mines. The idea is not even far fetched. Many die in the tunnels, why wouldn't one stay hunting the place and then posses one of the coal miners?
And that particular ghost could be also the reason why Norton went as "mad" as he did, in quotation marks. He is by nature a good man, it's just the life he had that made him as bitter and bad as he is, willing to go as far as to kill others for his own gain. But maybe it wasn't just his complicated life that made him this way, but also the evil ghost, with the same amount of hatred in him as Norton was slowly growing towards, that made him do and think the things he did.
Ghosts do have it easy to posses people with strong negative emotions, which is what Norton was feeling like shortly before getting posses by one.
And also, I wonder if Norton would even realise that he is posses by a paranormal entity. This man doesn't believe in anything at all. He doesn't believe in god — and I once said that he's most likely an atheist but perhaps he is an anti-theist instead — so obviously he doesn't believe in ghosts either. Maybe he'd perceive the ghost as not an entity but simply his other identity. Like, he felt such strong hatred towards the world and the rich that his Self parted into two. Norton and Fool's Gold.
If he started to hear voices, he'd think that he went mad. Of course, the idea of being possessed by a ghost would come up often, for humans tend to question the existence of ghosts and spirits when afraid, but he'd never take the possibility serious. Honestly, for his own mental health he'd convince himself that he's.. not alright mentally wise? Delude himself into thinking that he's crazy just not to go crazy..
And then eventually — because Norton wouldn't take any actions against what's going on in his head — Norton and Fool's Gold would perhaps morph into one. But, alas, he would then die an early and gruesome death because being possessed by a ghost rarely ends well.
