so much male fiction from pre like... 2005 is so severely bogged down in brain dead misogyny and diminished by it that from an art standpoint it's truly sad. like you read a guy who's so talented and has so many interesting thoughts but the only things he can think about women are "shrieking ugly harpy" or "boob machine." like watching someone paint a beautiful painting and then suddenly they get confused and scared and start smearing paint on it with their fingers like a child. and you're standing there like what, no! just paint the painting fucknuts!
