It's my birthday and it's a full moon. 😱 This year has been a roller coaster ride but I am grateful for the lessons and blessings. I am grateful for a loving family, supportive friends, opportunities, and challenges that helped me grow. The most difficult lesson I have found myself walking into was loving myself and taking hold of my self-worth. It has pushed me to speak my truth, create boundaries, and not allow certain situations or people into my space. Now I go towards the love even if it looks different than what I expected. This piece by Tau Lewis (Georgia Marble marks slave burial sites across America, 2016) captivated me from the moment I laid my eyes on it. The constrast within the work itself as well as the contrasting emotions and reactions it evokes from myself and our visitors is addicting. From tension, to silence, to fearlessness, to whispers, to understanding, to sadness, to peace, to uncertainty. This is what art is supposed to do. Tenderness within men, strength within women, and the ability to heal and transform through our roots/rootwork lives in this body if work. I am sending my love, support, and gratitude to Ragga NYC and all other Queer Caribbean artists and allies this month. Thank you! "Having wisdom without the space to share it can be a trauma" -Anne, one of our lovely visitors at the New Museum, reflecting on The Matters, 2016 by Lynette Yiadom-Boakye. Artist, story teller, ex-almost optician (😊), Yiadom-Boakye allows her audience to create their own narratives while also a creating a loose one of her own from familiar gestures, scrapbooks, and her imagination. Walking into (it actually feels as if you are walking into her work due the purposeful positioning) Yiadim-Boakye's gallery allows us to get the conversation started that doesn't quite seem to have an ending. Visitors usually say they feel a sense of warmness but also loneliness and melancholy when looking at the figures. I find this contrast to be the epitome of the human experience, brilliantly displayed in this body of work. As the artist says, she doesn't see these figures as people, but rather paintings...beings that transcend space and time. Art lives. Thank you! How this whole situation is sounding right about now. I don't believe in operating in fear...however, I feel like this may be a domino effect. Trump has been itching to start some $#@& with "outsiders" *cue Brooke Valentine's Girl Fight* we bout to throw them bows, we bout to swang them thangs. He is ridiculous on his own, but I also believe him to be a pawn for a larger cause and effect scheme set into place decades ago. FYI- my comedic relief is not meant to minimize the problem of our inept administration. I am seriously praying for Syria and the safety of our citizens as well. #Syria #America #Trump #2017
