Yes, that's right. The oldest, strongest people, some of whom lived in Middle Earth even back when the Ring was made - all cowering and covering their ears. It doesn't make any exceptions for the strong, ancient, or particularly valiant - it just says "the Elves." Legolas. Erestor. Galdor of the Havens. The mighty Glorfindel. Reacting like frightened a dog when fireworks go off.

And now I have a new mental image of Elrond, one finger still in his ear, glaring at Gandalf, telling him, "Never before has that tongue been spoken in Imladris, Gandalf the Grey."
