Being playfully rude with someone who doesn't know you on the internet is actually identical to just being rude
"I'm not an asshole! I only spoke to you, a complete stranger who doesn't know my good and pure heart, in a way that is indistinguishable from how an asshole would!"

Itâs a huge secret in my family that I like lemons as decoration. Not because itâs shameful or anything but because I know that if word got out to my grandparents and aunties that I like stuff with lemons on it Iâd get nothing but stuff with lemons on it for the rest of eternity. I just enjoy a few things with lemon pattern. I do not want to be flooded with citrus themed kitchenware every Christmas.
I'm a fandom oldie and a strong proponent of "ship and let ship", and I defend everyone else's right to ship what they love... But I think that gives people the idea that I like, automatically love every single ship??? Or every single trope?
I don't though!
There are a lot of fandom tropes that are on my "absolutely fuck no" list. There are a lot of irk kinks that are also on my "nope absolutely not" list, too. Personally, this is healthy. I'm able to look at something and go "Yep, I hate it, but it's not harming anyone, so continue to do as you please."
I think this is where the rubber meets the road for actually having principles. Itâs easy to defend the things we like, just like itâs easy to fight for our own rights and those of people just like us. When you have to use logic to extend your sense of justice to people you canât relate to, that actually takes effort.

The expectation that you will refer to a trans person by their preferred pronouns and name is not them âforcing you to accept themâ it is basic respect. You donât have to like trans people, you donât have to âbelieveâ our identities or whatever. You do have an obligation to treat us like people, though. If you had a 40 something cis male coworker named Bill and you repeatedly, pointedly and aggressively called him âShirleyâ and exclusively used she/her pronouns to refer to him, that would be a major HR problem. It is not persecution to have to show basic human decency.

ânatural immunity is good for kidsâ is my least favorite antivax pro-baby kissing phrase because. actually no. simple childhood illnesses can cause major lifelong disabilities. happened to me. happened to JFK. not to mention the millions of children in cemeteries across the globe who died from preventable and treatable common childhood ailments. ânatural immunityâ is not better than vaccine related immunity and getting kids sick when reasonable precautions could prevent it is bad.
That's exactly what's supposed to happen. People wish they could be activists, but they can't because they have to work in order to survive, so they make sure their children can be the activists.
Also, you're absolutely right that this is what privilege looks like. But for the 1,000,012th time, the word "privilege" is not an insult. Having privilege doesn't automatically make you a bad person, but it does make you more likely to have opportunities to be a bad person. It's also possible to use your privilege for good.
Would you prefer that she instead use her wealth to buy an excess of housing in order to profit and hoard more wealth? How exactly would that be the morally superior choice?
