so this annoying douchebag kid was on his phone and the teacher went “you have to give it to me now you signed the contract” and the kid didn’t even look up and said “contracts signed by a minor are not legally binding” and continued to text. and i hated that kid but…..dare i say iconic

Not a single neo-confederate in attendance listened. Not only did they not listen, several spoke up after to denigrate them while they were still in attendance. One lady got up to speak and said “I guess they got their degrees from Berkeley”, which made the neo-confederates erupt into laughter and applause. I thought it was weird, because they outright said they got their degrees from a university in this state. One man took the floor to say “we’ll never reach a consensus about the cause of the Civil War”, although professional historians already have: the articles of secession for every state that produced them mention the preservation of the institution of slavery explicitly as their reason for secession.

Would you advise someone to flap towels in a burning house? To bring a flyswatter to a gunfight? Yet the counsel we hear on climate change could scarcely be more out of sync with the nature of the crisis.

The email in my inbox last week offered thirty suggestions to green my office space: use reusable pens, redecorate with light colours, stop using the elevator.

Back at home, done huffing stairs, I could get on with other options: change my lightbulbs, buy local veggies, purchase eco-appliances, put a solar panel on my roof.

These pervasive exhortations to individual action — in corporate ads, school textbooks, and the campaigns of mainstream environmental groups, especially in the west — seem as natural as the air we breath. But we could hardly be worse-served.

While we busy ourselves greening our personal lives, fossil fuel corporations are rendering these efforts irrelevant. The breakdown of carbon emissions since 1988? A hundred companies alone are responsible for an astonishing 71 percent. You tinker with those pens or that panel; they go on torching the planet.

Coca-Cola: I’m going to extract a ton of groundwater and release pollutants, until the government gets involved that is.

Nestle: Water is not a human right and should be commodified.

Capitalists: 

They shouldn’t make the Doctor black or a female just to make him black or a female. It should make sense with the story. The actor/actress should be good with the role. They should be able to do the Doctor justice.

Because I’ve seen shows try to bring in representation, but it sometimes seems so forced and unrealistic. The writing sometimes just isn’t good. It’s like if a show makes a character come out. They shouldn’t just blurt out: ‘I’m gay/bi/ace/etc.’ but then never reference it again. It’s the same where if that’s all the character becomes about. Because that’s never how it is with people, there’s more to someone than just their sex/sexuality/the colour of their skin.
