There are four different types of trauma responses. Everyone knows about fight of flight, but fawn and freeze are something that rarely get touched on. Fawning specifically is a trauma response that I have personally found to have stemmed from constant emotional abuse, manipulation and gaslighting. Aims to minimize the damage as much as possible. Not only involves does it lying to your abuser about your own feelings and experiences toward their actions, but it's also an attempt to gaslight yourself into "wanting" or "accepting" the damage done, basically. It's like you're desperately trying to convince yourself that what the abuser had done was perfectly okay to delay the inevitability of the mental damage. Holding your shattering world together with glue. The fawn response is a percieved way to further protect yourself from future harm from the abuser, as you are aware on how they will react if you tell them anything they DO NOT want to hear. You know that the abuser may become withdrawn and upset and/or lash out at you if you tell them the truth. They may blame you or throw a massive pity party for themselves which results in you having to console them. And it's not anything you want to deal with, as it's exhausting and draining. So you just tell them what they want to hear. Leaving an abusive situation is difficult. Your judgement and mind are clouded with fear. The fear of losing the person you thought you could trust most. The fear of realizing the gravity of the blatant disrespect commited against you. And most importantly, The fear of what they will do after you try to leave. Beside, it's easier to put the blame on yourself than to accept that someone had taken advantage of you. I hope my explanation can put things into perspective.
