Related to the post I just reblogged about women in the kitchen-men watching tv, I remember when I was preparing an interpretation for a group of people from Sudan, so I looked up videos on youtube of Sudanese people speaking French to get used to the accent.
I found a morning tv show for women in Sudanese tv where they spoke about matters that were important to them. They invited the director of a feminist league, for instance, or they had other relevant personalities that had some interesting point of views, like doctors to speak about reproductive health. Overall, quite tame and polite, but they did adress some worries of their society, which was interesting because it is a country we don't know anything about.
They also have a moment at the end of the show to interview people in the street and ask them their opinion about some current subject. Once, they interviewed women about the topic "do you think it's a good idea to hire a maid to clean the house sometimes?"
I will give you a moment to think what would be the points for and against this that one could have.
It was very interesting to me because I would have never thought a point against would be "if a woman is cooking and cleaning your house where your husband lives, what else is she doing that is your obligation as a woman and wife? She might as well just take your husband, I'd rather do it myself, even if I'm tired after work".
Even those who did hire someone argued things like "she might clean, but I do the cooking, I don't want my husband to be confused" or "I still clean x parts of the house, she might want to change the sheets and then what? Take my husband?"
This is the same program that had the director of the feminist league explaining that she created said league because a friend of hers was kidnapped, raped and killed and she didn't want that to happen to other women, even though it's apparently a relatively common occurrence.
I am sharing this to show that the feminist fight looks very different in many different places. And sometimes, someone is illuminated enought to see a clear path against society, but sometimes this is how it starts. Progress is not linear, etc.
