Elrond started to wear muted golds to remind him of Gil-Galad, usually paired with a brooch at his neck. Nothing too bright, as he knew he could never have the former High King's theatrics when it came to shining fabrics and glittering brooches.

And Elrond also wore red velvet to remind himself of Celebrimbor. Nothing wholly velvet, no, and nothing wholly red, as those two things made up the Elven Smith's signature robes and he knew no one could wear it better than Celebrimbor himself.

The only time Elrond wore wholly red or gold was into battle. To remind the Uruk, and to, most importantly, remind Sauron, that the memories of those he had killed still lived on in the descendant of Lúthien.
