one of my fave things about australian politics is that it’s almost entirely made up of old white men who have no idea what they’re doing, no-one trusts them, they’re all racist fools who put us in debt, every single one of them has been thoroughly humiliated on tv at least once
and then there’s penny wong, a left-wing malaysian lesbian who is quite literally the only australian politician i know of never to have made a fool of herself. she’s never lost a debate. she is five feet of rage, climate change action, and whoop-ass. everyone i know wants her to be prime minister but she’s literally said she doesn’t think australia could handle it. i love her
Ah yes, the same Penny Wong who believed in "the traditional definition of marriage" until 2013, supports locking up children in offshore detention, supports new mining projects that will be responsible for 0.5% of the WORLD'S emissions, and just voted to cut Centrelink payments for carers and for a tax cut for the top 20% of income earners. Wong may be in the
Labor party, but don't mistake that for being left-wing 😑

OK, so The Weekly does have some great segments when it doesn't try so hard to emulate John Oliver - and this is one of them.
Nalini Joshi is a fucking badass. What she says about how mathematics is taught in schools is also v. interesting. I did well at the subject in school but was never interested in it. LBR, it was boring as fuck. Could this be changed by having the curriculum be overseen not only by education boards but by Professors in these subjects? While I’m sure this is done quite well in other fields, it’s obviously not done in regards to maths.

This is so concerning. So disappointed in the Queensland government. It's obvious that this legitimately comes down to picking business interests over the environment. This despite the numerous experts advising that the project is not commercially viable and some institutions refusing to bankroll, or invest, in the mine. Renewable energy is increasingly becoming popular through the world, and Australian governments are refusing to catch up.
Srs questions: Does Donald Trump see Clive Palmer as a kindred spirit? Did Donald get his inspiration from Palmer, in deciding to run for president? Will Donald seek further inspiration and form a new political party (if he doesn’t get the Republican nomination), invest a heap of money and run candidates in a multitude of races - a la the Palmer United Party?
Say what you want about Clive, but the 2013 Australian election was more than successful for the PUP - surprisingly.
Pretty sick of the myth perpetrated by the right that because the left advocates for racial and religious equality, it automatically means the left want to be ‘politically correct’ in dealing with terrorists. I mean, what does being politically correct in dealing with terrorists even mean?!
I would definitely identify myself as left leaning on pretty much all issues within the political sphere, and I would advocate for the harshest penalties available in an Australian court of justice for a terrorist, or would be terrorist.
I would, of course, argue that the best method in combating against terrorism in Australia would be engaging communities with those at risk of being recruited by terrorist cells. Engaging with communities and youth that radicalised men and women come from, could well be the chief combatant against such radicalisation.
To people spouting hate towards minorities within Australia through both social mediums and in public: this breeds hatred towards Westernised culture, and does nothing to improve relations and combat against terrorism. If a person finds fault with your statement and picks you up on your bigotry and racism, it does not mean that person is sympathising with terrorists. This argument is tired and completely false, and I’m not going to stand by and tolerate such ridiculous vitriol.

Tomorrow is the Irish general election, and holds a lot of intrigue for me because there’s 3 different parties polling at approx. 20%, with the highest at 29% so it’s all up in the air (I’m also Irish..). There’s 5 main parties in the country vying for votes. Having lived in Australia for the past 10 years, watching more than two parties in the leader debates began to give me a headache.
And I’m about to start watching the last few eps in season 6 and season 7 of the West Wing in order to prepare my irrationally excited self for Super Tuesday. I’m thinking Trump wins the majority, but Rubio will hold his 2nd place position in most states. Cruz will win Texas but by a narrow margin. And full disclosure, I’m hoping for Sanders to win a bigger percentage of delegates than he’s been projected to.
And then we have the Australian election… Will Turnbull call for a double dissolution? Will he call right before or after the budget in May, or later on in the year? Tbh, Morrison has not been performing as well as I begrudgingly thought he would be; his rookie errors remind me a lot of Hockey’s missteps before his first budget.
THE Leader of the Opposition in the Senate, Penny Wong, insists that the ALP has been a longstanding friend of Israel and will continue to be.
THE Leader of the Opposition in the Senate, Penny Wong, insists that the ALP has been a longstanding friend of Israel and will continue to be.
Speaking at the Executive Council of Australian Jewry’s annual general meeting in Sydney recently, she addressed concerns that the Labor Party’s one-time staunch support for the Jewish State on the international stage seemed to be wavering, and notably that there were factions within the party calling for recognition of Palestinian statehood outside of a negotiated settlement.
“To all those who question Labor’s support for Israel, I would say don’t just take heed of my words, look at our actions over the past seven decades,” Wong said.
“Our support for the State of Israel has been longstanding and is enduring.
“On the matter of the conflict, Labor’s platform has long recognised the right of Israel to live in peace within secure borders.”
Wong also reminded those in attendance that at Labor’s national conference the party did not resolve to recognise a Palestinian state, as was reported by some of the wider press.
She stressed that the party rejected the Boycott, Divestment and Sanctions campaign and noted it would only recognise a Palestinian state if there was a single Palestinian government that could enter into a binding peace agreement with Israel and that recognised Israel’s right to exist.
The Senate leader also addressed the current round of violence in Israel, describing it as a “new and horrendous manifestation of the conflict”.
“Labor condemns these attacks,” she said. “They must cease.”
Noting that the Australian Jewish community has been affected by the increase in terrorism across the world, she added, “All Australians have the right to go about their daily lives, to shop, to worship and go to school free from the threat of violence.”
In her closing remarks, Wong said the country and the ALP are enriched by the contribution of Australian Jewry. “Yours is a community that understands the importance of human rights, yours is a community that understands the need for tolerance, and you appreciate the hurt and lasting damage that hate speech can cause.
“I want to pay tribute to the contribution of the Jewish community to the campaign against changes to the Racial Discrimination Act that were proposed by the Abbott government.
“We would have been unlikely to have won that campaign without the Jewish community.”

Former Planned Parenthood employee tweeted the acts of terrorism she survived
After the shooting Colorado, author Bryn Greenwood tweeted a list of the regular acts of violence, intimidation, arson and vandalism she experience while working at Planned Parenthood. This most troubling part of all? Her clinic didn’t provide the one thing attackers were mad about.
Thankful that the anti-choice rhetoric in Australia isn't as widespread and as fucked up as it is in the U.S..
Two states (Vic and Tas) have legislation that prevent protests outside of health clinics that provide abortions.
N.B.: The principle of free speech is not the same as harassing and bullying women who are making choices about their own bodies. People who think they deserve a say, and the right to exert control, over women's bodies are a danger to society in general.
I used to work in a phone store where we had a lot of customers who didn’t speak English as a first language. A lot of Chinese people came to us because we had multiple Chinese speakers there and whenever there wasn’t anyone who could talk to them they looked so lost. They were so uncomfortable being in a spot where they needed to know important details but couldn’t communicate. Some would desperately try to see if we could help them even with the most broken English I’ve ever encountered. It was so fortunate for so many people that we had someone who could help them because they deserve help like everyone else because they’re… people. There doesn’t need to be a justification for that. They just innately should be able to shop at the same places as others and if a solution exists to their language barrier then that’s good.
It gets to me that people wouldn’t think that somehow making it easier for someone who didn’t speak English as a first language was a good thing. Just… cannot comprehend it. The whole anger at Optus for having an ad in Arabic is the dumbest thing ever. If they’d suddenly changed EVERYTHING to Arabic and there wasn’t a single bit of English on any Optus sign or material that’d be inconvenient but they didn’t do anything to attack English speakers, didn’t inconvenience them, or make them feel inferior, or drive them away, or do anything that would affect them at all in any way… they just added a helpful sign for the sake of a few people and a bunch of racists got incredibly upset that someone had thought of someone else. That’s basically it. “HOW DARE YOU TREAT OTHERS WITH KINDNESS?”
I will never understand how utterly lacking empathy and divorced from reality some people can be. It was just a sign. Let it go. What will you do next? Punch your kid’s Indonesian teacher in the dick for spreading that anti-English propaganda? Set fire to a sign that has Japanese safety instructions written on it at a tourist destination? Remove “repertoire” from your repertoire of words you know because it’s a loan word from French? God the possibilities for stupidity motivated by racism is endless.
