Snotlout wrapped up his training session in the fields as the sun crested the far horizon and happily marched his way home. His mother would be making breakfast by now, so he would come home to a hot meal. Absently, he wondered if Hiccup was still committed to doing his training with Emma. If he was, Snotlout was admittedly a little curious to see how he was progressing. Had they started yet? He knew Emma had long since been up, catching a brief glimpse of her crossing the square for the cliff face that led to the arena. She hadn’t seen him, and he couldn’t find it in himself to call out to her or take up her offer of training together. It would have been easy to see exactly what progress Hiccup was making with his own eyes. It also would have been a good chance to see how people trained without a father who accepted nothing short of might and glory.

Guilt took a bite from his stomach for doubting his father, but he shoved it away.

The last time Snotlout had seen Hiccup training, he had been sprawled on the ground, gasping for breath and trembling like a leaf in a storm while he curled in on himself in a last line of defense. They had been children together, training under his father.

Snotlout trailed Hiccup through the trees and maintained a careful distance along his winding path. Even when Snotlout lost sight of him, he could still follow the trail of disturbed earth. It wasn't until they reached Raven's Point that he lost sight of Hiccup. Even then, Snotlout was able to find the boy’s poorly disguised trail and follow the muddy prints and broken twigs to a rocky cliff face. Snotlout was proud to say he never once felt intimidated or scared of the sheer drop into a cove, but he was also focused on the steps leading away from the drop back into the forest.

I know what you're thinking- "didn't we already post chapter 12?" Yes. Then when we were going back through our story for unrelated reasons, we gave it a major facelift.
