Rey: Okay.

Ben: What?

Rey: Sure. Since you already know the way... Besides, why bother the trouble to find the second wayfinder in a dangerous mission? You've already found one, let's use that.

Ben: Really?

Rey: Plus, it would be better to have help while facing the Emperor. And since we both want him dead and we make a pretty good team, as we established in the previous film...

Ben: Whoa, whoa! So you're saying... you are going to Exegol with me?

Rey: Of course! It would be very stupid of me to go alone. Why would I?

Ben: Yeah, that would be dumb. So... Aren't you going to fight me?

Rey: Why?

Ben: We are in the death star, I guess a lightsaber duel would be very dramatic and visually outstanding.

Rey: Ben, if I wanted you dead, I'd kill you in the throne room while you were unconscious.

Ben: I know, right?!! It's not like you had to run in the desert and do a dangerous backflip!

Rey: Nah... That's just extra.

Ben: Good, that's what I thought.

Rey: Just to let you know, I have two lightsabers now. If you need one--

Ben: But I already have my own.

Rey: Yeah, but if you happen to toss it in the ocean--

Ben: Why would I do that? It's my only weapon! I need it to protect myself!

Rey: Lol, I don't know, just saying. Oh, another thing I forgot to mention! Now I can force heal. So if you get injured or die, don't worry, I got you.

Ben: That's a relief! I might try it too!

Rey: Sure, it's totally not dangerous! Nothing happens to you.

Ben: So I'm not risking dying or something?

Rey: Absolutely not. Since I did it without any harm, why would it harm you? Don't worry, you'll be fine. You are a fan favorite.

Ben: I know, JJ and Chris Terrio wouldn't dare kill me off.

Rey: It would make no sense at all. But even if they do, I healed a murderous snake once, I can do it again.

Ben: Hey--

Rey: Just kidding, love you, hope you come back to the light side! ♡♡♡ And even if you don't, that vision of us in the Sith throne was dope!

Ben: Oh you saw that too? So it wasn't just my dream. Were you sitting in my lap in your vision too?

Rey: Yeah and I kept touching your tight.

Ben: Good, let's kill that old man and sit on his throne.

Rey: But can we be on the light side while seated?

Ben: Rey, it's literally the SITH throne! What part of the word "sith" do you not get?

Rey: But you said you wanted to let old things die, remember? Can we just be grey jedi instead?

Ben: K, whatever, if we still get to touch fingertips I don't mind.

Rey: I should probably call Leia and tell her I'm with you. You know, just in case she wants to speak to you, she doesn't have to reach out using the Force.

Ben: That would kill her.

Rey: Yeah, she can just call me on this high-tech comlink we use in this galaxy.

A lot of people take issue with Bendemption and how it was handled in The Rise of Skywalker. “It was rushed.” and “It came out of nowhere.” are just a couple of the complaints I’ve seen. There’s also the “JJ retconned Kylo’s character development from The Last Jedi!” complaint as well. I can see where these people are coming from, but I personally think Bendemption is one of the few things TROS did well. Was it perfect? No, but it wasn’t as sloppy as some would say.

The problem, I think, is that many believe Kylo’s redemption arc started in TROS. This is not true. Kylo’s redemption arc has been building across all three movies (starting with his killing of Han as that leads to the guilt he feels for the rest of the trilogy) and he is already on the path to redemption at the start of the 3rd film. 

Let’s start with Kylo’s mask. He’s not wearing it at the start of the movie, in fact, he doesn’t even have it repaired until after his meeting with Palpatine. This might not seem like a big deal, until you remember that a year has passed since the end of The Last Jedi. This means that Kylo has gone a whole year without wearing it. When you consider what that mask meant and represented to Kylo, being like Vader, it is a big deal that he hasn’t put it back on even though there was no one to stop him from doing so.

“Yes, but he does put it back on!” Yes, he does, but I don’t believe it is because JJ is retconning his character development here or because he’s backsliding. As I said earlier, he doesn’t put it back on until after he comes face to face with Palpatine. Why? I believe he puts the mask back on to play a part. The Emperor told him to kill Rey, and Kylo is trying to convince not only the Emperor, but the rest of the First Order that he is going to do just that. The mask is a symbol. A symbol not only of Vader, but a symbol of who he was before he took it off. Kylo puts the mask back on to try and convince others that he is still that same person, even though he is not.

It is also important to note that he takes it off again when he and Rey finally come face to face in the desert (I forget the name of the planet) as he did in The Force Awakens. He isn’t trying to hide who he is from Rey. He wants her to see him as he is. Of course, once he returns to the Star Destroyer he puts the mask back on, to once, again try and fool the FO, but then removes it for the finale time when he and Rey face each other on the Star Destroyer. After that, the mask is never seen again.

Then there’s the opening sequence in which we see him plowing down a bunch of people on Mustafar. According to The Rise of Skywalker Visual Dictionary (and this is another disservice of the movie that it is never mentioned) that those weren’t innocent people. They were Vader cultists. So not only was Kylo not killing innocents, but people who actively worship his grandfather, the grandfather that just a short while ago, Kylo himself looked up to and wanted to emulate. This is thematically important. If he still desired to be completely like Vader, why strike down Vader’s followers? Kylo may have convinced himself that he still wants that, but in truth his actions say otherwise. By killing Vader’s followers, Kylo is killing off that part of himself that desired to be like Vader.

Also, Kylo makes it clear that it isn’t that he doesn’t want to return back to the Light, but that he believes it is too late for him to do so. He says this twice, once when talking to Rey and again when talking to Han. Kylo has come a long way from murdering his own father to try and becoming strong in the Dark to actively wanting to return to the Light, but feeling like his choices prevent him from doing so.

Ben imagining the scene with Han in tros isn’t about conjuring a fantasy where Han forgives him (Han did, but that’s not what Ben’s doing) and then suddenly he’s decided to make the right choice. It’s Ben being able to finally face himself and admit the depth of his guilt, to retread the steps of the past and commit to a different path in his present. 

He’s no longer the man shakily lieing to Snoke that he didn’t hesitate. He’s no longer the man demanding he and Rey burn the past so they never have to truly face, understand and learn from it. 

At this is the point where Ben is envisioning this scene, he’s saying “If I could, I would make a different choice. What I did was wrong, this decision shattered me and I’m finally allowing myself to feel and acknowledge the weight of that guilt, of that pain, to face the past and learn from it. To take that step to being a better man that I refused then,”

“Dad…” “I know,” isn’t about imagining a scene where Han forgives him. It’s the broken, unspoken “I love you, I’m so sorry,”. What Ben is imagining is that Han knows this, that he can see Ben’s remorse, not that he forgive him. 

TROS: *makes rey a palpatine*

TLJ: rey’s parents were bad people who sold her. this is thematically important to her whole arc about finding her identity. in order to grow and mature as a character, she must let go of the idealised picture of her parents she has in her head and the harmonious infancy she never had. she wants her parents to be good, noble people, and by having them be bad nobodies, we force her to change and grow, to create her own place in the universe/her own identity. 

TROS: actually rey’s parents were G O O D  P E O P L E who sold her to ~protect~ her uwu

TLJ: we killed snoke to make room for the actually interesting conflict, the one between the conflicted supreme leader kylo ren and the resistance, his mother and rey.

TLJ: the jedi failed. they were arrogant and stuck in their ways. they were so terrified of the dark side that they turned a blind eye to the darkness rising with palpatine. they deal in absolutes. it is time to let this flawed order die. we must learn from our past mistakes. failure is the greatest teacher.

TROS: rey is a jedi now

TLJ: rey and kylo have a complicated relationship. they are beyond physically fighting each other, they now have to figure out their emotional conflict on how they are going to navigate their force bond connection and ambiguous feelings as supreme leader and resistance fighter. 

TROS: *more lightsaber fight nonsense*

TLJ: rose is a self-assured, determined character, an integral part of this story. she acts as moral authority to finn, helps him find his purpose in the resistance and embodies hope, resilience and fighting for the right cause.

TROS: *1:16 minutes of screen time*

Beware that much of this is currently speculation since TROS was recently released and there’s still many unanswered questions and new concepts that need further explanation.

Before we begin, a keyword in this overall theory is “VERGENCE” which is a Force phenomenon that centers around a place, object, or an individual.

I want to start with the minor stuff first. Luke’s compass was first introduced in the game Star Wars Battlefront II which came out the month before The Last Jedi premiered. The Jedi compass is explained to be attuned to find specific hyperspatial points and is also what guided Luke to Ahch-To. Note that it is described to function similarly to the Sith Wayfinder that was introduced in TROS. So the Jedi Compass is the equivalent of the Sith Wayfinder. The Jedi Compass led to Ahch-To. The Sith Wayfinder led to Exegol. Image 2 of the compass is found in the TROS dictionary page “Wayfinders” to compare the compass to the sith wayfinders. I promise there’s a point that I’m leading to with this, but just keep in mind these two objects as I delve further on.

On the other hand, does anyone remember what happened to Luke’s compass? We saw it in The Last Jedi so it makes sense that it would appear in the TLJ visual dictionary. But I don’t remember seeing the compass at all in TROS, so why would it reappear in the TROS dictionary?

This is another minor detail, but I wanted to add the Ancient Starmap artifact from TLJ because in Star Wars the starmaps have often been used to find certain celestial bodies or specific objects. I’m just not sure how this would compare to using the compass/wayfinder or perhaps they can be used together.

Now, let’s get into the more solid evidence… We’ll start with Ahch-to…

I want to grab this part of the line where it says Luke lost track of time on the island because of neglect AND because of something about the island itself. I want to tie this is in with the concept of the Dyad. We don’t know much about it but we know that a dyad pair is a special kind of Force Bond that connects the two individuals across space and time. We have seen Rey and Ben connecting across space a la their Force Skype session and we’ve seen how they are able to physically transport objects across space itself through their dyad bond. But what about the TIME aspect of their connection? We’ve seen them connect across space, but we have yet to see them connect across time itself.

Let’s go back all the way to TFA when Rey touches the legacy saber for the first time and experiences a force vision of events.
