Weirdly specific questions!

“ What do you want from me? ” { Evienne }
This was probably an unusual situation for Leondas. Sure, it wasn't actually the first time he'd encountered a giant, but this one was following him around and she had a notebook, of all things. Being a literal mind reader also made locating him easier.
"Oh, I'm sorry. I just wanted to learn about you!" Said maybe just a bit too cheerfully for the level of suspicion she was being regarded with.
She glanced back down at the notes she had been taking, which were filled with observations about him as well as questions and theories.
"You look like a human, but I can tell you're not. I specialize in studying the extranormal, things current scientific knowledge doesn't account for. Would you mind if I asked you some questions?"
"Maybe." Artair shrugs from their perch. "I mean, it's possible! Just like.... I've ended up a lot of places. Some were different from that one and this one, too. So it's hard to say." Sometimes it felt like a strange pull, one that maybe always was there, but only strong enough to influence them when they weren't aware enough to resist. The thought was uncomfortable though, and wasn't worth saying.
"Can I ask what you mean? Like. Bringing something back with you." They turn away from the scenery, looking up at her face. Her glasses are at a size that makes the frames almost the thickness of a wall. It's interesting. "Like... samples to study for your job, or like a 'look what followed me home' type deal?" They know a lot of the stuff that lurked around there wasn't the most friendly.
”The way you describe it does make it sound like that in your case you’re the common denominator rather than the location… But that doesn’t explain why I’m here. Unless this place has more of a pull than the others, so it was only natural it would bring you, since you’re prone to that sort of traveling, but it’s also able to bring others who don’t normally experience it.” She was trying to reason this out logically, though she may have unthinkingly also included their unspoken thoughts in her assessment, along with what they had said aloud.
She couldn’t help but smile at the question which immediately suggested that whatever she meant wasn’t a bad thing.
“Closer to the second thing. I know that’s not really… proper protocol when researching an environment, but I met an entity while I was exploring and it really liked me and asked if it could come back with me. I couldn’t say ‘no.’ Now I’d say we’re really good friends.”

"Weeeee!" Erica's delight was unfortunately matched by the capacity of her lungs. It was safe to say Willow was going to receive a request for a water slide for the facility's pool soon enough.
It was an intense but fun ride that deserved to end with a flip. Getting soaked really was the last of Erica's concerns. Her clothes were designed to handle her enthusiastic ways of experiencing environments. She would dry up quickly as soon as she got out.
"This is great! And then you have all those pool toys and you don't have to pick them up when you're done!"
It was the perfect vacation spot, really. And with all that water, Erica simply had to splash Nihil.
"So you have all this stuff to look at. Do you ever want to leave?"
Nihil hardly minded her expressing her enthusiasm, even if it was a little loud. She was positive, peppy, and fun, and that was hardly something to complain about.
It opened its mouth to say something only to get a face full of water. It spit a stream of the water back in her direction.
However, despite all the fun and games a pool-themed world seemed to promise, the answer to her question was a more somber one.
"Ever since I first saw wanderers I wanted to know what other worlds were like. The Frontrooms sounds so lively. It'ssss.... actually kind of lonely here sometimes."
The Backrooms wasn't a very social place, though Nihil felt odd for being interested in the first place, given that fact. Shouldn't it be more at ease with the environment it was born for?
"Oh--- I think I've been there. It's a strange place." They nod, peering out over the expanse of saturated landscape. Occasionally there's some new building that breaks the monotony of the cookie-cutter suburbia, but usually it's something that's built so stereotypically it might as well have sprang forth from a child's drawing. Most of it is that almost pristine white sliding, black tile roofs, in the same shape with the same white fence along the backyard perimeter, and the same pale door with an half-moon window and brass knob. Then there's the red barn with the white panels and a cornfield. Then more buildings. The perfect rendition of a stereotypical community pool. Buildings, a clinic with a big red heart and a staff of aesculapius hanging over the tinted windows and entrance. The dreamy quality persisted, but more in artistic undertones than sensation.
"Not like that though, with researchers. Just an accident." Another small laugh escapes them. "That sounds kind of impressive, though. And you do have the lab-coat. I'm guessing you're some kind of scientist, too?"
As she walked, Evienne was glancing from one side of the path to the other to take in all details of the environment. Nothing really stood out as different from the established pattern of this place so far, but she still took a moment to reach down and brush her fingers over one of the tile roofs, bending at the knees rather than the waist so as not to disturb her passenger. It felt pretty much how she would've expected, but once again was very clean with minimal grit. It made her wonder if this place ever experienced any sort of weather patterns that would've caused rain or anything else to fall on these roofs.
She was surprised to hear them say they had been to the Backrooms as well. It wasn't exactly a common travel destination, especially to come back from.
"You really do get around. Maybe you do need that shackle for your bed!" Unless the bed just... came with them.
"But if the Backrooms was somewhere that you accidentally traveled to, just like this location, that could point to potential similarities in their nature." What was that they'd said? That in-between spaces couldn't get enough of them?
"That's right. I'm a biologist, to be specific. I wanted to study the extranormal life in the Backrooms. ...And ended up having some of it come back with me."
I’m always saying this

Greg let out a yelp as he was pulled back. The path he'd been walking on seeming to not exist under his feet. His legs kicked a little and his arms flailed for a few seconds.
"Holy brisket," he said, looking down the the floor. That- looked like it was there.
He looked up at his savior, eyes wide for a moment.
"Did you uhh.. know that was there? You know, you really should get that fixed. Someone could get hurt." His tone landed somewhere between a worried dad, and like he was trying to crack a joke.
The kicking and flailing didn't make holding onto him any easier, but Nihil managed not to lose its grip and eventually managed to haul Greg up and over the edge of the walkway it was on.
"That... that happens sometimes." It glanced back down at the long drop where the supposed floor had fallen away. That was really the best explanation it could give since it really was just a fact of life there.
"I'm not really sure how you would fix it either..." Part of it felt bad that it couldn't offer a solution to that, even if doing so really wasn't any more realistic than trying to 'fix' weather patterns.
"Ah..." Okay, now the nature of the other's telepathy was actually starting to sick in for him. Could you blame him though? The concept of reading someone else's mind as easily as one breathes air wasn't exactly easy to swallow.
"Have you ever heard of the concept of privacy? Some thinks that are thought, don't need to be known." Lord knows he's heard way too much about who was doing what with who from his colleagues. Shameless gossips, the lot of them.
"And yes, exploding people with my mind does help me get through the day."
A pause.
"...so do you just sit around terrified of being implicated for a crime just because it crossed your mind?"
That sounded like a miserable way to live. He wasn't going to say that out loud though. He didn't need to.
"Until I came to earth? No, I hadn't heard of the concept of keeping thoughts private. I actually theorize that humans originally developed such a strong concept of privacy as a protective mechanism."
There was a big cultural gap here, things she would never understand on the level of firsthand experience, but as a scientist she was trying to figure it out. Hence the slow nod she gave to the confirmation that exploding people with his mind did help. She was going to have to work that one out.
"Well, no. To fear something you have to think about it... or know it exists. That's the key to all of it. If no one thinks about it, talks about it, or does it, no one learns it's possible so it never occurs to us."
"If someone did manage to come up with the idea to be violent, they'd have the thought removed from their head so it wouldn't spread. It's not like we have jails. I guess the hardest part is just the curiosity of what those thoughts were. I feel like I have an idea now since coming to earth though. I've... learned a lot of things here." Thankfully she had enough morbid curiosity to not just turn around and leave traumatized.

"It is! It's a great way to practice my flips. And I have a pool too!"
It wasn't endlessly convoluted, but it was large enough to accommodate all the children of Carthage at once. Still, Erica allowed Nihil to hold onto her and settle down. The way it looped around them had her tilt her head again. It almost felt like one of those fancy water park rides with the pool floats.
"You're a fun noodle dude. Let's go!"
She threw her hands in the air, ready to have a blast.
'Fun noodle dude' was another new compliment to receive. She didn't seem to mind the close proximity either. This was nice.
When she said she was ready, it pushed itself off of the edge and into the slide and off they went, picking up speed as they went down. As promised, there were plenty of twists. The slide they had gone on being the one that spiraled all the way down helix-style, which generously extended the length of the ride.
It all ended with them flying out the exit to splash down into the water at the bottom. Nihil flopped out on its back.
one of my fave character design things will always be characters with pointed/animal-style ears that move according to their emotional state
this. this is what peak performance looks like

"Good to know!"
She would have needed to tap into her emergency stash if she had to feed more residents. But the problem was eagerly cast aside in favor of the fun time ahead of them. Erica was climbing the steps two at a time. She was so ready for this.
"Sure, that's more fun! I guess I should go first."
Some thought was put into it as Erica stepped aside to tuck her tail in. Slides were fun, friction burns were not. She was sitting on the edge in no time, impatient to get going.
"This is so cool! I wish I had a slide in my room, but I gotta make do with the trampoline in the gym."
"A trampoline sounds fun." Although without humanoid legs it might end up looking more like when a fox tries to jump on one.
Nihil sidled up behind her once she was in position, wrapping its arms around her from behind like they were riding a motorcycle together. Its tail looped around in front but slipped under her knees, taking the place of one of those inner tubes you might go down a slide in.
"Okay, I'm ready if you are!" It gripped the edge of the slide with its feet and was ready to push off as soon as she gave the go ahead.
