âGuisors at Christmas Time in the Mining Districtsâ from the Illustrated Times December 20th 1856.
The author of the guising article Mr J. Brown writes:
âAt Christmastide in the pit districts âguisors,â or boys who have dressed themselves out with strange masks to render themselves as awful -looking objects as possible, proceed at night, carrying turnip-lanterns suspended on poles, and call at the neighbouring farm-houses for the purpose of collecting what money they can. The writer of this notice has often met with these unearthly-looking groups in wild places, sometimes relieved on a hill top by the light of the moon or of the blazing pit firesâ.
