singer, songwriter, cowgirl and friend lotta said goodbye to her horse silberstern. i joined her and ranch hand vitus on a dreamy trip to the wild east of germany where we filmed material for a potential music video and, more importantly: to reminisce.
one year ago we filmed the material for my second short niere vom schwein (pig kidney). it was completed this summer. a second version includes 16mm-material found in my friend axel roch's archive. the archive consists of around 2000 educational films from the 50s, 60s and 70s made to re-educate the german population after the third reich. axel bought the archive for 1€. we went to visit half of it a few months ago and i found two rolls: das hausschwein (the domesticated pig) and aufbau und funktion der niere (structure and function of the kidney). we digitalized both.
i called five butchers until i found one that sold me three pig kidneys. to remove most (some) of the urine smell, the kidney is watered for 24 hours. i built a set and plastered the wall with a screenprinted 70s-GDR-pattern in the shape of a kidney. the cooking scenes involve the cutting of the organ. the urine smell that was released did not go away for days. i am shown eating on camera. it took us many takes and therefore many bites. i had stopped eating pig a while ago. it wasn't hard to continue resisting afterwards.

i painted a small series of four works this summer. two of them are visible here: schaubild: cat-call (#2) & cat-call (folge). the tryptic is one possible answer on a fitting reaction to the event that is portrayed in the single red painting.
i exhibited both at the university of arts in berlin. some visitors understood the diagrammatic perfectly and told me that they find it harsh. i liked that.

boat in question: viking cinderella, connecting stockholm and helsinki. duration: 16 hours 45 minutes. the cinderella is a social pyramid but in the shape of a rectangle. posh cabins are on top, big windows. cheapest cabins ("anchor level") are probably beneath water surface. no windows. weird smell. we sing karaoke. the lecturer wins a cruise at the jägermeister bar. i win a toblerone bar and bottled water.

lecturer tells me about finnish artist riiko sakkinen's research about a community of 30.000 fins living in the spanish city of fuengirola; they are called "los moimoi" (finnish for bye bye) of fuge and do not bother to learn the country's customs or language. i find artistic research pointless most of the time, but not this time. another exception that i cherish: sophie calle

one of my friends tells me that he had once found a body in a stairwell, and that he owns or owned a shirt that belonged to the deceased, and that the man was very fat, so the shirt is really big
finnish television offers a counterpart to a legendary german show called bares für rares ("cash for rarities"); at the beginning, a copper kettle is auctioned off; a few hours after my lecturer tells me this, i find such a kettle (i don't buy it)
german ambassador shows up at the exhibition i traveled to; i rattle on about my favorite facts about the carnivalization of the world and the court jester artist (right afterwards he says goodbye, did i get on his last nerve?)
during the seminar for the exhibition i have many ideas for new works, most of which i write down
i finish Oh... by philippe djion (it starts and ends with an "oh...") and begin reading Man Appears in the Holocene by max frisch (a mix of really intense foreshadowing and madman-with-a-pinboard trope).

mein dozent erzählt mir von riiko sakkinens künstlerische forschung über eine 30.000-köpfige finnische gemeinschaft in der spanischen stadt fuengirola. die finn:innen werden „los moimoi“ (finnisch für „tschüss“) genannt und kümmern sich nicht um die sitten des landes oder darum, die sprache zu lernen. in der regel halte ich künstlerische forschung für sinnlos, aber diesmal nicht. eine weitere ausnahme, die ich sehr schätze: sophie calle.

i made this very much in time. i will exhibit works on pigs, kidneys and pig kidneys at my doctor's office. his colleague agreed immediately. i don't think he knows who exactly is going to do it. i went regularly to have him realign my spine. he did not comment on the exhibition plans. i like that.
i started going back to this series that includes a bunch of paintings, drawings and a short film. so far, nothing satisfying happened.
this attempt is too floral i think. jonathan said something nice along the lines of the pigs looking cozy and squashed at the same time. i want to add the suckling pig's apple.
